RC1 is now avail to "public"
http://dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=4091

RC1 is good till Jun 07

Looks like MS will spoon out the downloads in segments so as not to crash WWW.

It is very critical for D/L speeds as to which sw you use to download
The akamai DLM is good and avail at the d/l page
Firefox internal works good
my greenbrowser only got 44K
Flashget is also good

http://download.windowsvista.com/preview/rc1/en/download.htm

32 bit (+akami downloader avail)
http://download.windowsvista.com/dl/pre...-2230_x86fre_client-lr1cfre_en_dvd.iso

http://img506.imageshack.us/my.php?image=vistascreenieva8.jpg

as far as keys/activation, the following has worked for others.........

Do the install with any beta key (or no key), or skip to phone in activation
This will give prod ID
Call MS hotline and input by phone your prod ID for activation, which will fail
You will then be turned over to a live rep.
The rep will ask for prod ID, and how many lic you have (1)
He will then give you new prod ID

In other words, its just like when you call MS for new XP key when you have done too many HW changes

Edit: I'm told akamai only works with IE, dunno

I don't know why you'd need to call MS other than to harass them. The damn keys are good for a dozen activations.

hey fella, you are way behind the learning curve, but I aint gonna argue with you - I got better things to do.

yeah, I just call MS to harass them.

what you dont seem to understand is that is MOST peeps dont have a CPP beta 2 serial
and anyone who tried to share a key with someone else had it BLACKLISTED when he tried to ACTIVATE it.

man, posting on AT is such an aggravating exercise in futility, so many tards

MS is handing out the damn things for free, who cares if it's blacklisted?

Where is the arguement?
For those without a key, or any means to get one immediatly, the phone method may work for those anxious to try Vista for the long haul. The 15 day grace period will probably be enough time to aquire one, but who knows.
Not to worry, MS wont go broke manning the phone lines.

I am really impressed with RC1...it's like day and night compared to Beta 2. Performance is fast, smooth and stable..even F.E.A.R. runs well! . Heck, I now boot reluctantly to XP, whereas I felt relieved when I returned to it from the nightmare Beta 2 was.

I can't even get RC1 to install... it starts copying files and shuts down my PC bigtime... like I have to pull power out the back and wait a few seconds and power it back up... pressing the power button doesn't work until I do that... REALLY weird and it kind of freaked me out...

Anyway - Installed XP MCE again and all is well...

bahhhhhhhhhhh. I need some help. when I try to start vista a screen comes up saying that there is a hardware error. Everything in my PC is common stuff that should supported. It wont even load up in safe mode. And it gives me like half a second to choose between XP and Vista. Any Ideas?

I went and tried letting vista repair itself and it said it was unable to automatically repair itself. It said that I must disconnect in devices like a camera or flash drive I didnt have connect before the install. I have absolutely nothing connected to my computer. I tried disconnecting my floppy and that didnt work. I am completely stumped.

Just installed RC1 as an upgrade to 5536. Upgrade worked fine and all settings, etc. were saved. So far haven't seen much difference between RC1 and 5536 but I'm sure I'll come across some.

I have installed RC1 32bit on on my new conroe system (see my rig) my first vista experience with my new setup. It installed ok execpt it seemed to do it very slowly. The system is like a slideshow now its like frame by frame like a driver problem. So I installed ATI RC1 video drivers and still same problem. I have checked resources on machine and there not show any high usage. I did the compatability test and there wiere no probles showing for video or hard drive. The via drivers that were installed by default have no updates and seem to be no problem. Anyone used this board for vista? I hope I dont have to send it back and get something more compatible.

Looks like most of the memory bloat from Vista comes from SuperFetch, Explorer (no surprise there), AeroGlass and the SearchIndexer. Unfortunately, the only thing you can realistically turn off is Aero.

Memory commit between these four items alone is about 250MB.

Is it possible to disable the search indexer?

This isn't memory bloat, this is SuperFetch doing what it's supposed to do. Caching your frequenly used apps in memory is a lot faster than paging.

I'm not sure exactly where to post this as there are half a dozen Vista threads around here; but in case anyone's interested, game performance actually seems to be really good in RC1...(OpenGL games excepted, since ATI's current drivers don't support it yet).

I was able to play UT2004 at my usual settings at a constant 60fps, and 3dmark06 scored around 5275 on my currently-unoverclocked X1900XT (haven't much experimented with overclocking yet). For reference, the last time I ran 3dmark06 with my card at stock speeds in Windows XP, my score was something like 5050....that was probably 2-3 driver revisions ago.

So basically (from my admittedly limited testing so far) 3D performance is right on par with Windows XP...which I was very impressed by, being a larger beta/prerelease OS with beta drivers... Things have improved a LOT since Beta2.

Man I have tried and tried but I can not get Vista to work at all. If I install from inside windows it goes through all the install once I add my PCI IDE drivers, it reboots finishes a few things, then reboots again, once it does so it gives me a error with winlogin.exe and says the file is missing or corrupt and to run repair. Cant fix it, if I try to install by booting off the DVD it asks for drivers, I toss my IDE drivers on a USB drive and it finds thoose, but it gives me no option to continue and keeps asking for drivers. Im not sure what the heck its looking for really...

This is with a Intel C2D, Gigabyte DS3.

Does anyone know about the problem and how to solve it?
Is it the mobo? My old AGP 6600GT runs fine.

Vista is DEFINITELY a big memory pig. Expect problems with anything less than 1024mbs of memory. Vista will run on 512, as thats whats in the NF2 but not very well. All that eye candy in Vista, also requires a lot of onboard memory on the video card.
