Only takeaway I got from the Carol flashbacks was that she always went running towards the fire.

LOST was the master of flashbacks and it gave depth to the characters. more importantly, made you care about them.

I loved the flashback crossovers from that show too, like when Jack ran into Desmond running on the stairs. See you in another life, brother!

Desmond was awesome.

Columbus, ga isn't exactly a small town. But then, Benning has tanks now. Brb surviving for weeks in a jump tower off stuff I looted from the airborne shoppette.

I've stayed in Chester while I had training at Benning for a little more than a week back in 08, it's like a developed suburb. With the amount of soldiers and firepower at Benning, they can easily control Columbus GA even if 100% of the population turned. I would only have doubts if they turned all at once and then charged Benning as 1 massive hoard. Even then Benning has enough land mass and Rangers to take out the the hoard.

They also have enough MREs on post to feed everyone until they get stuff growing.

You know I've never actually watched that show. Hardwick looks annoying so I never bother to tune in. Is it good?

It completely depends on the guest panel...
 - The writers and producers (Kirkman, Nicatero, Gimple, Hurd, Huth, etc.), most of the actors (Scott Wilson, Tyler James Williams, Michael Cudlitz, Josh McDermitt, Lauren Cohan, etc.), some other stars (Conan O'Brian, Jim Gaffigan, Adam Savage, etc.)
 - Most other stars (CM Punk, Yvette Nicole Brown, Matt L. Jones, Dave Navarro)

Chris Hardwick can be a good host most of the time, but sometimes he tries to hard to be "nerdy funny." He asks some pretty good questions though.

They have some recurring segments like "In memorium", where they pay homage to those who have fallen during the episode (both dead and alive) and behind the scenes, both are pretty good. But then they have stupid segments like a quiz and fan tweets that I couldn't give two sh*ts about.

Ok, maybe I will give it a shot.

Good lord do I fucking hate fan/viewer tweet segments on any show. Just awful. D:

No kidding!!! And so many shows do that now.

That and "get out your laptop or tablet and join us..." If you don't think your show is entertaining enough on its own to hold my attention, then maybe a second device isn't what's needed.

talking dead is a great watch. Just fast forward the stupid question game and twitter nonsense.

Seeing the actors talk about their work is really satisfying. Would love one of these types of shows for GOT.

ps can we stop with the comic talk please? two different entities.

Agreed. Loved that.

The flashbacks were very strange in this episode. I did not understand the point of some of them.

KT

Agreed.

The flashbacks showing how she got by on her own early in the episode were appreciated. The latter flashbacks, of smoke and burying, seemed very heavy handed and don't add anything to the character. A common writer's tip says never create story moments that are of no relevance, either to the character or plot. If it doesn't add or move the story along, skip it. Which is why we rarely get bathroom scenes.

The flash backs of all the smoke and fire was mentioned in the Talking Dead. It was to symbolize burning away of your past lives and starting new. Carol is basically on her third life: abused wife, teacher at the prison (showed burning in flashback), true survivor at all cost (showed smoke from terminus). The smoke shown when she was burying the two girls was from the house that Daryl and Beth burnt down. That was Daryl's past life as an abused kid being burned away. She was also burying the last of the young kids she taught at the prison really ending that teaching life she had.

Yeah, the first thing I thought of with all the fire references is the mythology of the Phoenix, a creature which "dies" in fire but becomes resurrected from the ashes.

Ah, I wasn't even thinking to note symbolism.

This is why I like following discussions of shows. Symbolism was often used in Lost, and without further reading, it was still a fine show - but really understanding underlying symbolism and mythology really adds finer layers to good shows.

Yeah...but without a single author to the storyline, it's pointless. I don't know if that makes sense, but it seems that an author in literature has a single voice and represents the beginning/end and everything in between.

In these series, the episodes are almost always written 1 or 2 at a time with little thought to specifics of next season. They typically only look back in the storyline for continuity and creating symbolism from past events that weren't thought out. This is what bothered me most about Lost and other shows. They were simply milking the network and the viewers for all they were worth by following a simple formula by delivering diverse characters (connect with larger audience demographics) and using suspense and discovery to hook the audience (not giving everything away until the last possible moment).

It can be entertaining when you don't think about the actual value of what you're watching.

You don't need a single voice to have a good forward looking story. You just have to write the story before you sell the season, or have extremely good vision.

Game of Thrones for example, vast story well connected, no single voice. Of course it was basically all written or understood before it became a show.

Breaking bad is a good example for different reasons. Less voices, but still no single voice. I don't think it was laid out like GoT, they were basically writing a season at a time IIRC, but the writers had excellent vision.

I don't understand this whole
]hostage taking
storyline. Why keep them around? Just fucking kill them.
Eventually Dawn will run out of henchmen/women to do her bidding. Plus keeping them around means they have to watch them and risk someone escaping to tell Dawn what's happening.

Rick wanted to do it the right way but Daryl and kids keep dragging them towards danger. Once again someone becomes too trusting of someone they just met.

Just watching talking dead now.

sasha actress is preggo in RL and I thought it would be awesome if they wrote it in as bobs child.

I have a theory that kids born of two infected parents end up immune. Nature has to find a way!
