OK, OK, the Terminis episodes stayed from the formula a bit. In that case, the Terminis guys turned on Rick's group before he had a chance to piss them off Similar results, though.

What else should they do?

In the series thats really only happened twice in that exact formula. Once with The Governor and once with Negan.
I think it happened more often in the comics.
3 times, the Terminus group in season 4. The theme continues with a larger, better armed, better organized group each time.

Terminus did not follow that formula. They Grimes gang never even got a chance to call it home, nor did Rick do anything hostile to get them violent. The cannibals always planned to eat them.

Sure, 43 minutes of content... with a 75 minute air time.

That. Usual running time for a TV drama is about 41-42 minutes of content in a 60 minute slot. TWD always runs in a longer slot. While you're often getting a longer running time than a network drama that's getting padded out with a lot of extra commercials.

Oh, look at that... they lose a doctor, they amazingly gain a doctor. The formula stays intact.

I kind of wish that the show would throw us a bone, and do something actually unexpected to keep the show interesting. Maybe the guys from "The Last Ship" could miraculously show up and give them a zombie cure... nah. That never happened in the comic book.

IMO, they had to kill him off because he aged too quickly. In the comics, Carl is still young and his story arc loses some of its impact when it is happening to a 17-18yo. In the comics when he lost his eye it was a big deal. In the show it really wasn't. Negan pressing a 13yo about his fucked up face was great. In the show it was practically skipped over.

I think they have an opportunity now to do the rest of those types of stories from the comic with lil-ass kicker instead. It will be disappointing if they don't take advantage.

I'm not happy about the rumblings that Cohen wants to leave. That really fucks up her whole story arc that they have been building for a while now.

I thought he was fired. Supposedly he bought a home near the set.

Dad seems angry as well.

Yeah, he was fired, but that could mean a thousand different things. In TV you don't just get fired for being a problem on the set or doing bad work or having outrageous contract demands. Maybe they just ran out of things to do with the character and wanted to focus on new storylines that wouldn't involve Carl. It's a show with a high attrition rate, characters die and new characters come in. Killing off old-timers is necessary from time to time so that viewers know nobody is safe. It's the only way to keep up tension, otherwise it's Star Trek where only the nobody in the red shirt gets whacked while Kirk, Spock and McCoy are guaranteed to survive. Killing Carl could have simply been the best option creatively.

It looks like they introduced a new batch of innocent looking cannon fodder for the Saviors to kill off in a few episodes.

Is that actor from GTAV (Trevor) Still on the show? I gave up a couple of seasons ago. I dug his character as its pretty much "Trevor".

Well, that will prevent them from following the comic book plot line, won't it?

The way the ratings are going the show has maybe two seasons left anyway. Lincoln and Lauren Cohan are only signed for 6 episodes next season (Cohan is starting another show), so losing their salaries may allow AMC to drag it out a little longer for better or for worse (spoiler: for worse).

The ratings are back down to season 2 level and dropping: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:The_Walking_Dead_ratings

Costs go up as TV shows age. Rising costs and dropping ratings don't go well together.
