Ok, technically it's not over, but all that's really left is some light mop-up. Let the party begin.

U.S.: Saddam No Longer Controls Baghdad

Hundreds of Baghdadis cheered US troops rolling through a district of northern Baghdad, applauding and chanting "Good, Good, Bush!", an AFP journalist said Wednesday.

Hundreds of Iraqis cheered U.S. troops in Saddam City, a poor neighborhood in northeast Baghdad. "Thank you, thank you, Mr. Bush!" one shouted.

In areas already taken by the Americans, there was widespread looting of government installations: computers, furniture, even military jeeps were plundered.

A BBC reporter in Baghdad reported "scenes of jubilation" in northeastern and eastern sections of the Iraqi capital as US troops advanced.

Hundreds of jubilant Iraqis cheered, danced, waved and threw flowers as Marines advanced through eastern Baghdad and into the center of Saddam's seat of power.

Tens of thousands of Iraqi Kurds hail US "liberators"

This is the criminal, this is the infidel," he said. "This is the destiny of every traitor. He killed millions of us." Small bands of youths tore down portraits of Saddam and chanted, "Bush! Bush! Thank you!"

They danced in the streets, waving rifles, palm fronds and flags, thrusting their arms in the air and flashing the V-for-victory sign.

Iraqis in U.S. Hail Crumbling of Regime

Arabs Watch Saddam's Demise in Disbelief ~ "It seemed that Iraqis were all with Saddam, now it looks like many didn't like him. Maybe those destroying the statue are rebels against Saddam's rule,"

BAGHDAD (AFP) - The streets of Baghdad erupted into scenes of jubilation with euphoric crowds meeting US troops advancing through the heart of the Iraqi capital as President Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)'s grip on power crumbled. Unconfirmed reports said residents among the heavily-armed population of the quarter had forced out the Fedayeen Saddam militiamen before the arrival of the US troops during the night.

I would tend to agree, but the looting will need to be brought under control at some point.

Let them have their release, they have every right and probably a serious mental need to take any aggression out on the regime any way they can.

Just watched some of them destroy a big sign of Saddam.....

An old man beating a wall mural of Saddam made of fabric with his shoe while people spit all over it and kick it...lol

"No more (President) Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)," chanted one group, waving to troops as they passed. "We love you, we love you."

One young man ran alongside a Marine armored personnel carrier trying to hand over a heavy belt of ammunition.

An older man made a wild kicking gesture with his foot, saying "Goodbye Saddam."

Sounds like good news. I'm at work until 7am EST, so I will have to wait until I get home to see it.

If scenes like this don't shut the anti-war people up nothing will.

This should also serve as a message to those who think the people of Iraq did not want us there.

I hope Morph is getting to see this......

I cant speak for others but I never doubted that many Iraqis will welcome coalition forces.

But: many non-Iraq arabs see this war as American colonialisms and I believe will lead to more Bin-Ladens. This regardless of what the Iraqis feel since Iraq != 9/11.

Hopefully this is the beginning of the end and the coalition forces will be able to leave Iraq as soon as possible and Iraq people with the help of UN will establish their own government. Continued presence of military forces will only lead for the worse.

Time will tell.

I think the plan is establish order and turn over power to the Iraqi people as quickly as possible. The sooner the better in my opinion.

Alistar7, give it up. You have absolutely no way of knowing when war will end. They're cheering because of the looting and their city is in total anarchy.
Oh... I forgot, you're part of the coalition, the Lazy-Boy brigade is just trying its best to keep us updated.

"There may be many more fierce fighting days in front of us as coalition forces continue to move within Baghdad and within the country," he said as jubilant crowds and hordes of looters took over Baghdad streets now empty of police and authority.

Thorp noted that the half of the country north of Baghdad had not been occupied by U.S.-led forces. That included Saddam's home city of Tikrit, 175 km (110 miles) north of the capital, where U.S. officials have said resistance could be stiff.

Then why are they chanting pro-bush statements and throwing flowers?

This is the end of the war, the rest is mop up, the majority of the Iraqi army has gone home and given up, you should to.

This is a pretty significant moment, I think it deserved a thread....

BAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! I remember quite a few people arguing that, "You don't know what the Iraqi people want!" and posting articles about how the people see us as invaders. Right, they don't want to be free of a murderous dictator that rapes and tortures them.
God, I hope they post here! Somehow I doubt it though.

We also took key targets in Mosul and Tikrit this morning, they will be fully under Coalition control soon, less resistance than anticiapted has been the case again, as with Krabala.
