So should we just revoke the citizenship of like a quarter of Republican voters under your system or what?

...and deport them? Hell yes!

Well I actually couldn't support the above but they are relentlessly trying to inject religion where it ought not be. They are threat to freedom; albeit a fading one.

Now we're talking!

That was a tongue in cheek remark on my part.

That being said, do you believe that people who attempt to inject religion into politics are a threat to a secular democracy? I happen to believe that.

My tongue was planted firmly in cheek as well...at your expense of course. Who are these people that are a threat to secular society? Not sure what you're talking about.

Any given person who has a religion is going to at least some degree have their political views influenced by their religion. Elected government in the US is something like 98% Christian. I applaud President Obama for having his religion's influence on his policy be somewhat minimal. At the time George W. Bush seemed downright theocratic with how he tried to have some of his religious views dictate policy. But recently we've had a wave of far right Republicans, the Tea Party and Freedom Caucus people who think theocracy is a good idea and make W seem secular in comparison. And it's the ones who think their religion should be law that are the scariest ones. We've got I think 4 very theocratic individuals still trying to become the GOP nominee, Ted Cruz, Mike Huckabee, Rick Santorum, and Bobby Jindal. I think Ben Carson probably belongs with that group but he's really not given us any idea of how he'll actually govern (unless his weekly fiction story time that has been every public statement he's made for months counts).

This thread is getting to be a bit like a bunch of Nigerian scammers trying to work each other over. We need a scorecard. I'll start:

I'm not outraged about anything; the War on Christmas is way too much fun.

I will honour the War on Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year. I will live in the Past, the Present, and the Future. The Spirits of all Three shall strive within me. I will not shut out the lessons that they teach! - Charlie Dickens

Why go all the way to Nigeria, how about Iraq (pre - war liberation):

There is no outrage over the War On Christmas. These Christians are totally NOT Social Justice Warriors claiming persecution. No one is feeling like they are being warred against, even when they do say they are being warred against.

I believe it is a kind of intellectual laziness. Our country should do X because the Bible/Koran says Y. That is no justification at all. There should be defensible reasons that are referrable to objective reality not some interpretation of a bonze age book. God hates fags therefor gay marriage shouold be illegal. God wrote the 10 commandments therefor we need to put them in front of courts. God caused a flood therefor we need to teach creationism in schools. Etc.... If you can't support your position without invoking God, it has no place in the political arena.

Give this story two more days and it will have completely vanished from the American consciousness.

That's how important it is.

But the fight between two sides that just don't ever want to sit down and understand each other, this fight is going to live on in strength.

This "war on Christmas" is more analogous to a sports rivalry. From both sides.

Perspective is everything. Few here have it.

From my horrible, evil, rotten, subhuman Christian cousin's Christian wife...

/sarcasm

I like how my friend put the whole Starbucks cup thing: "Do I know anyone who is TRULY offended by the red cup?" Not one person that I've asked cares whether the cup has anything written on it or not. It's a coffee business, not a religious bookstore. They're entitled to put whatever they want on their product. We can go there and buy expensive coffee...or not. What a waste of time worrying about a paper cup, when there are many more pressing concerns this time of year.

i think everyone would agree she is a reasonable human, so what's the problem?

oh that's right, it's those christian extremists who aren't being reasonable.

There's a difference between Christians and the right wing evangelical fanatic Christians that made this thing blow up. They make up probably at least 1% and not likely more than 25% of Christians in this country, but they exist, and they're insane. Unfortunately they're also louder than most other groups and make up a disproportionate amount of Congress (like the entire Tea Party and Freedom Caucus).

Well I for one am offended. Why can't the govt. force everyone to write "Happy Spaghetti and Meatballs Day" on sippy cups?

I'm not understanding the story here. The cup is red. That is a holiday color. What are we supposed to be mad about?

This is one of those times where it's fun to agree. I see the red & green and thought it at least 'fairly Christmassy' at first glance. No big deal. [shrug]

Some say it's LESS 'christmassy' than previous designs that had winter-themed pictures on it, but if one thinks about it... really, what do snowflakes and snowmen have to do with Christmas either?

If anything, this cup is MORE 'Christmassy' than merely a winter theme. Heck, take it up a notch and make the green circle around the logo more of a wreath?

Let the all new war of accusations now fly in the opposite direction.

*sigh* People need more to do if THIS is what they constantly bicker about.

Well, I know one thing for sure: I'll be glad when Donald Trump wins and we're all required by law to celebrate Christmas.

How come we never have images of God impregnating Mary? Wouldn't that be the most holy image imaginable? Isn't that what Christmas is really all about?

Just saying.....
