We need to look at the numbers. Obama: Won overwhelmingly won the black vote, hispanic vote, asian vote, jewish vote, women's vote, gay vote, etc. while still winning a good amount of the white vote who are well educated.

Romney was almost all white men.

Now who is playing identity politics here? Obama with a broad and diverse coalition with so many different backgrounds and experiences or Romney with his monolithic block of people who have de-assimilated from American society?

This is exactly they same as when black people voted for Jesse Jackson and the Rainbow Coalition over Michael Dukakis and Walter Mondale back in the 80s... oh wait, they didn't.

Well, how about all of the black people who voted for Alan Keyes over Bob Dole and Ross Perot in the 90s... but that didn't happen either.

A white racist might not hold a mindset where his racism consumes him, and so it might be safe to vote for him on surface policy. But the racism of a black who is prejudiced against blacks? That's not likely to be ignored.

The Democrats and the black vote has a solid foundation going back to the Civil War. Basically the same groups of people that wanted to keep them enslaved or wanted to let other people keep them enslaved are now the Republican South and parts of the Midwest. The people that supported Lincoln were, probably in character, bleeding heart liberals who wanted to free the blacks and give them full rights, or at least people opposed to slavery.

Party was defined by the slavery issue back then so "Republican" back then meant something completely different, anyway over time Democrats, which had long been associated with the south, became Republicans, because of the civil rights issue. A lot of them were somewhat conservative anyway and ended up going farther to the right when they joined forces with the northern fiscal conservative Republicans. That combination of fiscal conservatism combined with social conservatism from Evangelicals in the South is today's Republican party.

The liberal Democrats in the northeast, who had supported civil rights, then teamed up with minorities to be the left wing party of today.

People voted for Mr Obama's policies not his race. Alan West and Alan Keyes are black guys and I doubt they would get more black votes than Mr Romney did.
