After this with Wink, how could someone who travels or needs to let people into their home feel comfortable that wink could be relied on. If you go away for 2 weeks and the dog needs to be fed and you use wink to let the person in? Are there terrarium lights or heaters that are going to overheat as they are left on? What about other items that the away owner has no idea of the status of? What about temperature control. Are thermostats going to let homes freeze or overheat? This is really a bigger issue than a few lights that don't work. People were lulled into a sense of security by a promise of reliability and that ship has sailed.
Think "well whats the worse that could happen? if a device is left on or doesn't turn off? well that will happen to someone because of this screw-up unfortunately.

Excellent point

Just fixed my hub with the help of Ben.
You change the DNS to point to Wink's servers and the hub can update that way.

Yep, basically, that's it. My suspicion is that they staged a temporary update server which doesn't have all of the certificate authentication enabled so that you can get the update which fixes the issue and then you can point back to your own DNS servers, which will resolve to the "regular" update servers.

DNS on your router? Got the IP addresses?

PM sent. Note that if you run a separate DHCP server on your network that hands out IP/DNS addresses, that's where you need to change it rather than on the router. I have a 2012 AD domain with DHCP servers at home and I changed it there, rebooted the hub, and it updated properly with no issues to 0.86. I then changed the DHCP DNS servers back and rebooted the hub again to verify it would connect and it does.

DNS on your router? Got the IP addresses?

Go into router admin settings to change DNS, according to your router type: https://support.opendns.com/forums/21618374
Take note of your current DNS settings, we will use them later
Update router DNS address 1 to point at 52.4.183.25. Update router DNS address 2 to point at 52.0.103.131 (if applicable)
RESTART YOUR ROUTER after you save your settings. Internet will go down while router updates. Wait until it comes back up
Reboot the Wink hub, make sure the light goes blue
The hub should immediately start updating if it is on production (if not, it will need to be manually updated)
Confirm when the update is over that hub firmware is on 00.86
MOST IMPORTANT PART: Reset your DNS to the way it was before you changed it in step 3

Yes, these are the instructions. Remember my caveat above though - if you run a separate DHCP server on your network that hands out IP/DNS addresses (ie, you don't use your router for DHCP), that's where you need to change it rather than on the router. I hope we still get the $50 codes -- one of my Trippers appears to be dead (not related to this outage; I was having issues before) and I wouldn't mind getting another set for $4 shipped.

OPINION: There is so much getting ready to happen the 2nd half of this year that jumping hubs right now doesn't make much sense. Amazon Echo integration, Apple TV with a built in HA hub, Lutron on Apple Watch. There's so much more coming. Relax and hold on, it's going to get really crazy in a short while.

Yeah, I agree. Enhanced Echo support, Apple support, Samsung support, plus 6LoWPAN is out there, all kinds of stuff:

Would pay to wait

I can also confirm the fix worked for my already activated hub.

Unfortunately the Wink App is currently blocking adding new Hubs, so the NIB I have seems to be unbrickable currently as it is not connected to my Wifi and I do not seem to have a way to connect it.

Just tried the $50 code . . . it varies with the first item you pick (as low as $30 and 0 shipping or some shipping. . . Not sure what's going on.

This is where the Ethernet port in a v2 release would be most welcome (and a black color too so it matches the rest of my nerd gear, hint hint Wink ).

Hmmm. I didn't fill out the form requesting a box yet, so I don't have a unique code. Not sure how I'll get one at this stage.

The Caseta Pico and switch worked through the outage.

However, I noticed a tripper that I re-synched Friday or Saturday morning isn't recognized. . . but I'll worry about that another day.

I had a Tripper that didn't seem to work either (didn't try the other two) but I've been having lots of issues with it and while I could re-pair it with the hub, it would never change from open to closed. I had a spare Tripper that I replaced it with that seems to work. I'm hoping Wink will still give me a discount so I can buy another set of Trippers, as I want to put them on my gates.

Off topic in light of the fun this weekend, but anyone have exp with the GoControl security products? Setup sensors and the siren, but when setting up robots (pain as a single robot has to be created for each sensor) the siren can never be set.

There are options for:
Off, Siren and Strobe, Siren Only, Strobe Only.

By default Siren and Strobe is set and nothing else can be selected. Touching the buttons doesn't do anything. But when looking at robot it shows "Siren and Strobe Off". Cannot figure a way to turn this on.

Is there something I am missing? Siren works, tested setting it off manually.

Fix worked and Wink hub is back online.

Thanks to those in this community who shared the info and helped everyone who needed it get the fix implemented for their hub. THIS is what the community is all about.

Also, props to Wink for thinking the problem through and getting a fix out that didn't inconvenience their users further.

I don't know if it's wise to post this without explicit instruction from Ben Kaufman and the Wink team.
People have gotten different DNS servers in their instructions, and they need to carefully check the outcomes to make sure it will work at scale.

Even then, they may turn this off at any point in time

I know it works, but please check with them if it's ok to do this.

Ben is easily reached on Facebook, Twitter (@benkaufman), or by e-mail (ben@quirky.com)

EDIT: Ben has cleared this on Twitter.
