Next best price is $128.88 at Buy.com.

Any coupon codes that could be added to this?

Of note, looks like a Blu-ray version might be in the works.... strange, as I am sure that not all season were produced in HD.

No codes that I know of. If you want it, you'd better hurry before it's too late- one day only!

Don't think, just buy! If you haven't seen this entire series, you owe it to yourself, and you can't beat this price! Each season has an "extras" disc with various featurettes included, but each one is different (you won't see the same featurette for each season).

So tempting but I don't think I'd ever watch it more than once. Great deal, though.

I picked this up. A lot of people, including friends of mine, insist The Wire is even better than The Sopranos, and it seems nearly impossible to just pick up in the middle (I have tried).

Why is this strange? Do you think Casablanca was filmed in HD? Explain.

I think he meant that The Wire was filmed on a none HD digital camera. Old film is actually higher resolution than HD.

Anyway, great series and a nice deal

The series was shot on Panavision 35mm cameras, early on with 4-perf, later with 3-perf. However, it was produced in a 4:3 aspect ratio. This was a conscious decision by the Director.

"The reason the show has stayed 4x3 is because David Simon thinks that 4x3 feels more like real life and real television and not like a movie. The show's never been HD, even 4x3 HD and that (SD) is how it is on the DVDs. There is no 16x9 version anywhere."

During shooting, they did frame for 16X9, which would lend itself to a wide screen hi def version. So a Bluray version may look better due to increased resolution, but it will probably still be 4:3. They would have to remaster (and possibly retelecine) the entire series in order to produce a 16:9 HD version.

So what does this mean to you or me? The Bluray version might be coming out, as Amazon has a listing for it. This sale might of been a way to clear the DVD stock. Keeping a Bluray release in 4:3 accomplishes two things.
1. It preserves the vision of the Director
2. It keeps the costs low for the Bluray version.

Great article on the technical & creative aspects of the show...

i heard the same 4:3 nonsense about the shield. as far as i'm concerned, everything should be widescreen.
