Did anybody see The Wire this past Sunday? I was watching it on HBO HD. They had an overview of the previous season in HD but when the show started it was only in SD. WTF is up with that? Are they playing games with us? Is it available in HD-DVD/BR?

The Wire has never and will never be filmed/broadcast in HD.

Same with The Shield. The creators think that SD adds "grittiness" to the shows.

Yup. Like all previous seasons, this one is being aired in standard definition. They did a pretty good up-res, though.

I've watched the first couple episodes of this season, and they're pretty good. I can't see them tying up most of the loose ends though after what I've seen so far.

I was confused by the SD part, too. I watched the previous two seasons in re-runs, but I assumed that they were SD because I recorded them off one of the non-HD HBO channels.

Great show, and I was quite disappointed to hear that it's the final season. Rome ends after two seasons; The Wire ends after five. And yet Friends went on for a decade. Does anyone else see a problem with that???

They had a quote in the Baltimore Sun the other day from the current mayor of Baltimore who is supposedly the one that the creator based that character on, and she says she doesn't cuss. The article didn't mention if she denies the allegations in the show though!

BTW, is it legal to hold back overtime and still force them to work overtime?

I was going to give this show a shot but HD has spoiled me. Saying that SD gives it 'grittiness' is just a cop out to keep budgets low imho. Or they determined that the target market is not likely to have HD anyway. Who knows.

I usually also avoid non HD shows, but I can't pass this up. Been watching since season one, nothing has been better.

I think the recap was stretched 4:3, the picture looked distorted to me.

if your avoiding this becuase it's not in hd, then you don't deserve to see it. go watch CSI:miami in hd instead. i'm sure the higher resolution will make up for everything else.

No...but I think the first 5 was sent to the media/reviewers and then promptly leaked on the net.

They've said that they started filming in SD (back in 2001) and to keep it consistent they were going to stay with it. Personally I wouldn't have minded if they switched it between seasons, hell, I wouldn't have cared if they switched mid-episode but once you get into the show you couldn't give a crap less if it was in b&w.

Seriously. I don't care if they broadcast this in Black & White, it'd still be the best show on TV.

On top of that, you really don't want to give the show a shot and start with Season 5. You'll have no idea what's going on or who anybody is. Do yourself a favor and watch Seasons 1-4 on DVD.

This is one of the few shows I can watch in SD and it doesn't bother me.

The content more than makes up for that.

Yeah his character is annoying but I love that "sheeeeeeeit" line of his. No one can pull it off like he can.
