I started on the second hardest difficulty but it was proving to be a little too easy. ( I Love a challenge )
Don't get me wrong, I died a fair amount in the beginning and certain fights required many attempts. (Arch Griffons and the General at the end)
I switched to Death March at level 15 roughly.
Basically the things to avoid are standing in the middle of packs,
going toe to toe with the Pike wielding NPC's and generally standing in front
of any big mobs.
Movement is key. I cannot stress this enough. ( I assume you know this)
Quen is your friend, eat breathe and sleep Quen.

As for gear, witcher gear all the way. Its the most balanced and its ahead of other armour at the same level. At the end I had all 3 sets of Master crafted.
I forgot the name but the Heal potion (2 uses) is very helpful.
I used Fast attack 95% of the time. (Whirlwind of Death)
Use the talents that generate adrenaline when using signs etc.
Use gear that boosts Adrenaline gain, the more adrenaline, the more you
can use Quen.

Again this was just my play style, each to his own

Meh. I played on maximum easy with the best armour and not many signs, just whacking. Otherwise too much effort.

If you keep the best armour, it does help a lot.
Honestly I didn't bother with any of the other signs.
Quen is just so much more useful for Death March

Amazon has this on sale for $40ish across the board (PS4, Xbox One and PC), so I picked it up and got it all installed (first time activating anything through GOG; the multiple download files was odd, but it worked like a charm). I haven't actually spent any time in it outside of making sure it actually opens, but right from the opening scene I can tell this game is going to be gorgeous. I still need to wrap up Witcher 2; I'm in Loc Muinne, so I shouldn't have too much farther to go. I'm just anxious to be done and get on to Witcher 3.

Oh, I did notice one awesome change in Witcher 3 from Witcher 2 in the 30 seconds I played it... the controller layout now includes a button for "Jump." I saw the little prompt come up when I was peering over the balcony enjoying the vista, and Geralt proceeded to fling himself off the edge to his death. How awesome is that?

GTX 970 not good enough for 1080/60 Ultra w/Hairworks? I'm getting 40-50.

Hairworks will kill your fps in this game, and doesn't add enough visually to make it worth your time. Turn off Hairworks and you should get good performance at 1080p.

Hmm wondering if it will be cheaper to purchase the expansions separately or just to purchase the expansion pass for $20

The expansion pass will probably be slightly cheaper, I'm going to wait for the Christmas sale and get the expansion pass then anyway so if you can wait a few month that would be the best time to get a deal. I intend on waiting for both expansions to be released before I get back in W3 again after I finish my first play through.

Nice tie in into the main story through that character. I guess it also explains why one of the ladies survived in the "good" endings.

I know I'm really late to the party, but I finally got a chance to start this, and WOW. It's immediately more engaging than Witcher 2, from the open landscape to the interaction with characters to the jaw-dropping scenery. The scenery itself makes me think of Red Dead Redemption if it had been made today (albeit in a more medieval and magical setting than the Old West; I think it's the lighting, or the horse). The combat is still janky, but the rest of the game is so enthralling that it's easy to forgive some minor control issues. I just wish I would've known that leaving White Orchard (post-griffin) meant 40+ minutes of cutscenes; I missed the opening monologue on Colbert!

Really an incredible game, even though I'm only 5 hours into it; I can see why people raved about it when it came out.

I can't for the life of me figure out the new inventory system, though. It hasn't been an issue yet, but I keep trying to meditate and inadvertently eating some bread. Oh, and why is it that only some enemies drop loot? I can see the drowner's head bobbing in the water, LET ME HARVEST HIS BRAIN. And how come I start in some excellent chainmail, and the first piece of armor I find with better stats makes me look like some damned court jester? "Well, I can either look like a badass fighting the griffin, or I can make the battle easier by equipping this and apparently cause him to die laughing." Who would be intimidated by this?

Fun game though.

Do you like reading patch notes?

Well here are 13 pages of them which should be coming before Oct. 13th.

http://wpc.4d7d.edgecastcdn.net/004D7D/media/THE WITCHER 3/Pdf/patch_1_10_changelog_en.pdf

Take some notes Bethesda, this is how you support a game and fix the problems.

Fun game though.

I feel your pain about looking like a clown, I stuck with the original upgraded armor for a long time until the Griffin set, then went to Cat and Bear later, unfortunately it takes a while to get better looking gear. You could download the free Temerian and Niflgard DLC armor sets which have better stats and look fairly good.

Also I would probably hold off on playing the game until 1.10 is released, it supposed to fix a lot of the GUI issues and provide HUD improvements along with a lot of bug fixes.

Not necessary to wait any longer, patch 1.10 was pushed not long after this post. About 6.4GB for my Steam download, could be much larger for some.

Yep, I saw it queud and updating, wondering why Witcher still has a patch....holy turdmonkeys 6.4gb!

Very impressive this long after release.

As for the armor--I had that problem, too. Even the Cat set, probably my favorite skill and playstyle wise, looks really stupid imo; especially the final 2 tiers.

I think the Wolf set is the best looking of the Witcher gear. Bear looks great for that "I am going to bash your face in and terrify your wenches" sort of way, But it doesn't really strike me as how a Witcher should play--both in that fantasy world and in gameplay (fast, fluid, light on gear).

Plus, even on Max difficulty, the game is painfully easy (I should try the new + mode, though), and the Bear set just makes it laughably stupid at that point--basically a mobile game that looks pretty "push button to proceed on your adventure!" It really can be that easy.

If I install the patch, are my previous saves rendered unplayable? I don't have that much time for gaming as it is, the last thing I want to do is get stuck having to replay the first few hours (awesome though they were).

my GOG version was still 1.08 when i played last night how do i get it too update?

Pretty sure you have to log in the GOG and get the patch from them. I got my copy through GOG and the latest patch was included with the download; I would assume they'll update when 1.10 is available.

not likely. You should be able to load the save files from earlier version and the new version saves rewrite those. I think the new patch functions or whatever won't work with older version saves until they are overwritten, or something like that.

They updated the game several times after release, and none of the patches ever broke any save file--at least, no saves were over unplayable and forced a restart.

I had no trouble loading 1.08 saves.

Good to hear. I seem to recall some warning popping up when I first loaded the game (version 1.08 at the time) about compatibility, but it was probably saying that 1.08 saves would be incompatible if I rolled back to a previous version.

Yes, that's what it was. Newer save versions won't work with older game versions.

Does anyone know if it's possible to obtain a save file from another player on the PC? If so, I would be greatful for that savefile or a save somewhere around the 20 hr mark give or take a little. As much as I enjoy The Witcher I'm a bit too lazy at the moment to start all over.

Wow, I loaded up the new patch and it runs sooo much better. I'm not sure if it is my imagination but I think they improved the graphics some as well.
