This is a game that doesn't play well at lower framerates. Some game engines don't feel so bad when you get framerate dips, but this one is not one of those engines.

I don't get how people are playing this game on console at sub 30fps

Hey Rick, try disabling blur and enabling sharpness if you want the game to look as nice as possible. The blur option does exactly what it says..

Here's my first screenshot, and this is with everything maxed @ 1440p but with blur, CA and vignette disabled..

That's the first thing I always hunt down to turn off anyway

1440p ultra on sig PC with AA on, hairworks on, everything else maxed out/turned on except blur & motion blur, vignette & CA are all off:

It's one thing to read about a massive game and another to actually play it.
Now that I'm beginning to size up the world, its' beyond impressive to have this (downgraded) image quality in a game of this size and scope.
After a long ride, I saw a NPC I wanted to talk to, I parked Roach but he went 50 yards down the road so I followed him, he went to a trough, that thing that looks like a canoe to drink water.

I have sharpness on and blur disabled but motion blur enabled. It seems to me sharpness makes the image look less seasick like when you move around. I don't like the witcher sense at all in this one and the camera moves way too quickly while you are running around. I was playing with my mouse and keyboard but today I'm going to try my xb1 controller.

I left the standard settings, 1080p, high preset with hair works off, blur off, haven't checked frames but I can hear my PC ventilating like its having a heart attack, also gets pretty warm too lol.

Am I missing some settings to make the game look or play better? It seems fine to me, haven't noticed any slowdowns.

Hardware cursor puts the mouse input to your windows settings so it takes it out of game acceleration/whatever it does. I turned it on not knowing what that meant, not sure I really noticed.

Loading times for me are very good but I have ssd's. Longest is the startup load which plays a movie for around 10-15 seconds. After that any loading screen is apparently too fast for the game as I see it with text to read but it goes by before I can read it. Loading screens aren't very common anyway.

I found that ultra terrain textures caused horrible stutter on my card, putting them on high really smoothed it out. Game is basically sitting at 50fps regardless of texture quality, maybe I don't have enough vram? I may also have some driver conflicts as getting a few stutters here and there. Still I find it very smooth at 50fps.

Also for anyone wondering, yes you can edit your INI file. In fact someone on reddit figured out how to bind the candle on/off to a different button so you don't keep extinguishing a candle when trying to loot something.

Can us steam versions not get polish dialogue? I looked but only had a setting for on/off subtitles. I'd kind of like to hear it in polish with English subtitles.

Game came out at a horrible time for me so not put that many hours in. Working on the noonwraith quest right now and really liking how thats playing out. Kinda fun to play sherlock witcher.

I installed the game by mistake to my external drive, 7200rpm Seagate, haven't used a stopwatch but don't worry about loading times.

I just did another side quest, loose description to keep it spoiler free. It would have been part of main story in other games based on the quality. At one point you are supposed to lead an animal by using a bell. I couldn't figure out the key binding (KB+M) for using the bell but I wanted to keep playing badly and not go into the menu so I instinctively tried a workaround by casting signs to lead the animal and it actually worked. Love it when games give options like that.

Oh, another thing I really like about the UI. I was buying some stuff from an herbalist and couldn't remember what all I needed for a bomb. I looked up and there's an arrow over to 'alchemy'! Click that and you go over to your alchemy screen where you can see what recipes you have, what you need, and you can actually craft from that menu! So nice not to have to leave/reenter/leave/reenter!

Do you have a 7970? I'm struggling trying to find the best settings for myself.

Yes, sorry I'll try to get you my settings tonight. Only had 40 mins last night so I opted to play whilst I could . I'm also still tweaking.

For reference mine is a 7970 that I bios flashed to a ghz edition, not sure it matters though.

I'm getting 60ish frames.......I'll double check - got raptr finally caught up to record better than afterburner.....

Running VSR - 1440p on 1080p....most things ultra; I'll look at my settings.....here's one of videos I've made for TW3....

I got a whole lot more uploading.....including first hour game play; a few deaths from doing something stupid like attacking level 7 mob at level 1

If you guys want to see anything else......let me know

At least you got it working,I was having install issues with my retail version like this below.

I checked and gave the DVD a clean(was not clean, surprising since I installed it straight out of the box).

Anyway seems to be installing now,if that fails will try the huge download via GOG.COM.

RETAIL (PHYSICAL DISC) COPIES:This kind of error happens when your disc drive cannot read the file on the disc. To fix this, please:
a) copy all the installer files from all the discs onto your hard drive, and install from there, or
b) use the code printed on the back of your booklet, to redeem the game on GOG.com, here: www.gog.com/redeem/

GOG.COM DIGITAL INSTALLER VERSIONSMake sure that you have at least 30 GB of space available on drive C:, or that you do not install the game onto drive C:. Otherwise you might run out of space during the installation, and it will fail.

Update: Installed and patched fine off to play .

So, about the actual game...

I'm starting to accumulate ability points, but not spending them, because I'm not yet sure how the mid-end game leveling and builds will work:

--can I skip any tier in the ability tree to spec into a later tree? Each tree unlocks at a certain level, so it says, which leads me to believe that you can skip each part of the tree. Probably the main reason for levels, since ability points are all over the place.
--Any idea if there is an option at some point to reset ability points? I would hate to get stuck down a path early game as I'm learning, only to be gimped end game. Well, this is always my concern in every game, and hate it when games don't allow this.

I'm currently going all light armor because the only point I spent is in that 25% crit damage +10% crit chance per light armor piece trait. Love it...but the first map's light armors are so fugly. I hope to find a light design that doesn't make me look like a clown or some foppish noble douchebag.

Did you get it from Gamestop? They are well-known for opening factory packaging, fapping on the discs, then re-sealing with shrink wrap in house.

no joke.

I'm not a fan of this game's soundtrack, to the point where I've disabled the music altogether.

How can you not like the music? The soundtrack is amazing IMO. D:

I hate the UI. Am I stupid, or is the only way to see and/or sell something you have equipped when in a store interface to; exit out of the store completely (double PITA because there seems to be a bug that sometimes prevents this), remove the items from character, put in standard slots and then re-open the NPC's store interface?

If you want to compare a store item to something you have equipped mouse over it in the store and hold shift. To actually sell something you have equipped, yeah, you have to leave the store, go to inventory and back.

Re: the bug, from what I can tell it happens when you move your mouse while hitting Esc to close the menu.

Also, the map doesn't seem to show squat in terms of place names, if you drag the map so that the mouse cursor goes beyond the border it sticks to the mouse, and off-screen quest icons are hard to locate because they do not stay captive within the border (like in skyrim where they 'point' you in the direction of the marker)

Sign posts show their names after you discover them but it doesn't help with undiscovered locations. There is a button, Tab IIRC, that will focus the map on your current objective.

Once you get into the main world and complete about 3 more steps of the main quest, you meet a sorceress name Keira Metz who sells a potion for 1000g that allows you to respec all points. Not sure about your other questions.

This can't just be me, when people say they are running the game "smooth" at 40-60fps I just can't see how that is possible. Either A: They are blind or B: They have are happy with shit performance. I had to tweak my settings for over an hour before I was able to get somewhere in the range of 55-60fps on a R9 280, even still I am not happy. The minute the frames drop to 55 I can feel the drop, I can see it. I have no idea how people can play any game at less than 60fps.

It depends on the game. Some games feel smooth at 40-50fps, others do not. I suspect it has to do with the implementation of triple buffering, not sure though. However I tried GTA at 30fps, 4k and to me it was unplayable. I don't understand what they do on consoles to make that feel playable. I played Destiny at 30 fps and it actually felt fine. I'm sure there are other factors which make the game feel smooth.
