Once you get into the main world and complete about 3 more steps of the main quest, you meet a sorceress name Keira Metz who sells a potion for 1000g that allows you to respec all points. Not sure about your other questions.

cool, thanks! It seemed like it had to be in the game, with the rather limited ability slots.

I think the 2nd tier of skills unlocks at level 8 or 10? I guess once I hit that level, I'll see if I can put a point directly into it, skipping the previous tier.

(I call the 3rd tier the 2nd tier because, technically, what looks like the "1st tier" is already unlocked across the board when you start. Those aren't really skills, anyway, just a description of your various abilities and what to expect from the skills below each slot)

Just saw the game use 1980MB of VRAM at 1920x1080 with no AA.

I mean when the tree is made up of a bunch of flat components that track the player, eg: https://youtu.be/RD4XwkzNB_I

So yes, it's very two-dimensional, and irritating to see them constantly swiveling. It looks cheap and nasty, and I wish devs would stop using it altogether. Hell, even Bethesda mended their ways and got rid of it 100% for Skyrim.

Is there any way to disable Geralt's beard? The shaving thing gets old really quickly, and I can never find any barbers. I'm sick of him looking like a senile old geezer. It's like AC Revelations all over again. I'm still having issues with his face, even without the beard. There's just something not right. I prefer TW2 geralt, even though he's technologically inferior.

And to counter all my bitching, the eyes in this game are superb! Not only the detail in the eyeball, but the surrounding area is really detailed with the eyelashes and the sheen on the rims of the eyelids etc. Facial articulation is good too.

if you install the hair DLC, it disables his beard.

It depends on the game. Some games feel smooth at 40-50fps, others do not. I suspect it has to do with the implementation of triple buffering, not sure though. However I tried GTA at 30fps, 4k and to me it was unplayable. I don't understand what they do on consoles to make that feel playable. I played Destiny at 30 fps and it actually felt fine. I'm sure there are other factors which make the game feel smooth.

Frame interlacing makes things look a lot smoother, as the transition from frame to frame is less noticeable.

The fall damage really needs to be tweaked. It is patently absurd. I find that parry/block only works against certain weapons, or maybe it is the level of your target? Those bandits with big two handed axes? that shit will not block...or it's just because they are level 5 and I am so far level 1 and 2. I spend most of my time trying to dodge around to eh side, anyway, as I'm getting nearly 60% effective at avoiding all damage that way.

For parry to work, you have to time it just before you are about to be struck. I haven't got that down yet.

The axe guys can't be blocked. I am level 6 and can't do a thing to block or party them. Same for bears lol

Yeah, I guess it is a "2 hand weapon effect" which is kinda cool, actually.

I guess bear claws = 2H weapon.

I think the same goes for most any monster slashing move? I recall not being able to block them in Witcher 2, but have mostly fought bandits in W3 so far,

This can't just be me, when people say they are running the game "smooth" at 40-60fps I just can't see how that is possible. Either A: They are blind or B: They have are happy with shit performance. I had to tweak my settings for over an hour before I was able to get somewhere in the range of 55-60fps on a R9 280, even still I am not happy. The minute the frames drop to 55 I can feel the drop, I can see it. I have no idea how people can play any game at less than 60fps.

It's why I run this at 1080p so it is always 60fps and not sometimes 50 but mostly 60.

I hate the UI. Am I stupid, or is the only way to see and/or sell something you have equipped when in a store interface to; exit out of the store completely (double PITA because there seems to be a bug that sometimes prevents this), remove the items from character, put in standard slots and then re-open the NPC's store interface?

Also, the map doesn't seem to show squat in terms of place names, if you drag the map so that the mouse cursor goes beyond the border it sticks to the mouse, and off-screen quest icons are hard to locate because they do not stay captive within the border (like in skyrim where they 'point' you in the direction of the marker)

You can see what you have in inventory but not what you have equipped.

So, about the actual game...

I'm starting to accumulate ability points, but not spending them, because I'm not yet sure how the mid-end game leveling and builds will work:

--can I skip any tier in the ability tree to spec into a later tree? Each tree unlocks at a certain level, so it says, which leads me to believe that you can skip each part of the tree. Probably the main reason for levels, since ability points are all over the place.
--Any idea if there is an option at some point to reset ability points? I would hate to get stuck down a path early game as I'm learning, only to be gimped end game. Well, this is always my concern in every game, and hate it when games don't allow this.

I'm currently going all light armor because the only point I spent is in that 25% crit damage +10% crit chance per light armor piece trait. Love it...but the first map's light armors are so fugly. I hope to find a light design that doesn't make me look like a clown or some foppish noble douchebag.

Well, eventually you shouldn't need to worry that much about skill points I believe because each area has places of power that give ability points for free when you absorb them. Anyhow you can buy a respec potion later in the game just in case.

I am putting my points so far into light attack power and critical hit chance as well as the one that gives 2% chance for instant kill for every adrenaline point or something like that. Also going to add attack bonus for crossbow and igni burning effect. I feel like I use those most. Might also add the one that gives bleed effect to weapon strikes. And round it off with heavy attack bonuses.

The skills don't need to be unlocked in order but they have a requirement that you have already spent a certain amount of ability points in that category though. It may require you to have spent 10 points before it unlocks. It doesn't unlock via levels(the slots you assign it to do).

Yes, sorry I'll try to get you my settings tonight. Only had 40 mins last night so I opted to play whilst I could . I'm also still tweaking.

For reference mine is a 7970 that I bios flashed to a ghz edition, not sure it matters though.
Don't think the bios flash matters. I got tired of messing with settings so I'd rather use something someone's already found to be optimal.

Did you get it from Gamestop? They are well-known for opening factory packaging, fapping on the discs, then re-sealing with shrink wrap in house.

no joke.

Online from gameseek.co.uk,normally no issues with them ,however I did notice some finger prints on some of the DVDs yes it was shrink wrapped.

Anyway I played a bit on Ultra settings with shadows on low, blur off,my 280x OC was actually doing quite well at 1080p with these settings.

I will play some more and see how the performance goes.

Game graphics look nice IMHO.

Man, has anyone killed the
werewolf
in the "wild at heart" quest? That fucker is ridiculous, he regens over 50 hp per second. I can get him down to maybe 1/3 - 1/2 health but he will always manage to hit me and it's either back off or die.

Are you using Quen at all when you fight him?

Found those earlier but those was about all I could find. That is for the beard and hairstyles DLC however. And the longest beard there is still quite tiny.

No because hitting him with igni has about a 30% chance to set him on fire giving you 3-5 seconds to attack him. At least with the sword and skills I have a normal fast attack does ~150 damage and this guy will regen that in less than 3 seconds. You have to stay on top of him with thunderbolt and strong attacks or you have no chance to stay ahead of his regen.

I just gave up on the fight, there has to be a bomb or potion meant for this fight (normal beast oil didn't seem to help). I do wish the game had a better way to research unknown monsters instead of just looking around randomly to find notes or books...

This DLC...is it automatically installed with the game?
Bought the game off GOG and it doesn't show anywhere.

Use Quen first away from him then run up to him and use Igni and then start hitting him with everything.

How fast does he land another hit after his first hit? When you use Quen it will soak up all of the first hit and thus will allow you to keep hitting him until he hits you again after that.

For Steam it is. Probably not for the GOG versions however. They are available on there so you can get them if you want to install them.

As was said above the beard and hairstyles DLC seems to disable the dynamic beard growing that is in the base game.

Shame it is.
