Ok so watching gameplay videos of Witcher 2 it didn't look like something I'd want to play... at all. But everyone getting all excited is making me wonder... what makes this series so good?

To be honest the combat is a little wonkie at times on both of the first 2 Witchers

BUT

The games are fantastic examples of great story telling and making choice and consequence matter. In fact one choice in the second game has a major impact that effects 2/3 of the game.

Most of the characters are fully fleshed out with conflicting motivations that make them both understandable and compelling. This weaves together excellently in the story. The world itself is also very human in its portrayal of issues like racism, imperialism, sexism, etc. Often time the Witcher games doesn't ask you to make the good/evil, paragon/renegade, etc choice. Instead it asks you what do you think is the lesser evil.

Geralt himself is an excellent character. He's not the typical villager of humble origins. He's an alchemically modified mutant trained from youth to slay monsters for a populace that would prefer to shun him and call him freak. A world weary cynic who'd rather go his own way than get involved with the politics that inevitably tracks him down.

A: Yes, sure. We’re having around 36 endings, as far as I remember. These affect the state that you will leave the world in after your playthrough.

Why on earth don't devs get away from using bloom?? There is so much of it in W2 that it's just ugly and looks to be even more in W3.

Looks like the game may be 64 bit as well. The Wiki entry on the Red Engine 3 claims it was designed specifically for 64 bit platforms:

I pressed him for a source, so hopefully he'll get back with me. It makes sense for this game to be 64 bit though, due to the open World design with no loading screens and no artificial boundaries or transitions.

That would be great. Accessing more memory for fewer sections of loading and such.

IIRC DICE was also talking about their new engine (Frostbite 3.0) being 64-bit only. Hopefully, we are moving to a 64-bit world. It's about time...

Not sure, but I hate it too. The entire Bioshock series has it in spades too and makes it look like garbage.

The game looks great and the developers have guts to make such a game in today's mainstream gaming environment. I wish them luck. (And I wish I'd have enough time to play through the game sooner than in five years).

While they say not necessary, I'd say if you haven't gone through them then it wont be nearly as immersive or interesting.

No but some of the past will be referenced and characters talked about. It may be helpful to know some of them and some of what is going on.
