You don't go from that to all assets are the same in next to no time.

I don't think having the same assets is the problem. It's possible to have the same assets, but multiple LoD versions with varying polygon count.

Case in point, look at this massive comparison screenshot showing different areas of Novigrad on the E3 2014 build vs the PS4 version. As you can see, the PC version has much better geometry and draw distance, but the assets are roughly the same with minor changes.

The problem that people are complaining about is that for whatever reason, recent PC footage isn't showing superior geometry like it did with the E3 2014 footage and that's extremely disappointing.

I'd be cool with the PC version using the same assetts as PS4/XB1 and then include a draw distance scale that let's me push the LOD out to infinity.

HOnestly it's the push to maximize up-close details at the detriment of LOD boundaries that is one of the ugliest facets of modern graphics rendering. I'd much rather more processing power be devoted to reducing pop-in and jarring LOD transitions, even if it means character models only get to use 50k poly's rather than 250k or whatever insane amount they use at the closest detail. A more stable image is always better for immersion IMO than one that looks great in screenshots but crap in motion because everything is constantly redrawing.

...But one soul lies anxious wide awake,
For the Witcher, the brave and bold,
Paid in coin of gold.

He'll chop and slice you, cut and dice you,
eat you up whole, eat you whole.

2 more days...

IF they did downgrade the graphics, that is extremely disappointing mostly because they lied with regards to ingame footage shown earlier. It's okay to have graphics that are not stunning, but there's no need to show stunning then downgrade. People would not have had a negative reaction if they didn't feel lied to. I still pre-ordered the game, but if they really did downgrade I probably wouldn't preorder CDPR games anymore.

Video of PC Low vs. Ultra plus Details Graphics Comparison
Its a pretty good video, if you watch it all, it shows a lot of different graphic settings and comparisons.

Hairworks was about the only one that seemed to make an huge impact. Textures on low vs medium had a visible difference but it wasn't as substantial from there. Some of the others like foliage won't make a huge impact unless you are really trying to count trees from miles away.

What I'm struggling with is if you put graphics aside, will the PS4 or PC give the better experience? Are the keyboard controls sorted out enough or will a controller be preferred?

While there are some very major differences between low and ultra in more than a few ways it seems there are many similarities between low and ultra which I do not think is actually necessarily a good thing for the game. This could mean that much of the potential for ultra has not been put into the game because CDPR wants to gain more efficiencies from the production vs earnings or also for console parities to appease Sony and Microsoft.

You are going to want the ability to use mods if you can.

Just watched some ps4 streams and it doesn't look very good on console. I'll be better off on PC I think, despite I would it enjoy it more on console.

Someone on the overclockers.uk forums are saying that the review copy (day 1 patch) includes:
better vegetation
better ao
water tesselation
better textures
better shadows

And we're only seeing footage of pre-release settings now that are missing review copy/day 1 patched extras.
So the game should look better than what we are seeing now.

But I have yet to see anyone post any links to anything concrete to confirm that info.
If anyone does, could you share a link for us.

Then I'll get it on PC, missed playing witcher 2 so this one is on my radar for sure. I was thinking console but looking at streams, it looks bad.

Link showing difference between preview and review version!

Review version looks noticeably better! Especially the foliage, and ambient occlusion now looks to be working! Also according to the article, water tessellation is now working and it responds to the wind. Plus, the draw distance is better as you can see in the comparison shot.

This comes at the expense of a performance hit according to PCgameshardware.de though, but thats O.K as good things are worth it

That certainly doesn't match the old preview footage but it's way better than what we've seen. I thought some of the filters on the early stuff was way too overdone but the new previews just looked too evenly lit and flat. The review settings seem to have a nice neutral balance of good realistic lighting. Shame we can't get some of the texture detail back from the early previews but it'll still be a fun game.

You can play it, but a 7970 is more than 3 years old already, so I would expect something like medium settings. The minimum recommended is a 7870, after all.

Well even low settings looked decent. I'll just customize the settings and see how it runs.

To me that still doesn't look that amazing. I could be blind but it doesn't look any better than Dragon Age. But of course you really need to see it in motion to get a good feel for it.

that grass look nasty as hell. a far cry from earlier screenshots and goes way beyond a "sharpening filter" as the devs claimed.

very disappointed by the texturing as well. going DSR/VSR isn't going to change that.

the overall feel/atmosphere is just too...vibrant. i was expecting something more bleak.
