Like I said, attention span. You probably just have other, more important stuff to do in your life. It is the same reason a lot of adults stop reading...

I read plenty. Far more valuable time spent than playing videogames, unquestionably.

attention span /= time available.

oh, and I have 24 hours logged into that game. It's not like a gave it a few hours and gave up.

like I said, I really wanted to like it--just took me way too long to realize that I was spending my time running around and doing pointless pick up and deliver quests. that shit is what annoys me. :\

I enjoyed it, but I think it is slightly overrated. I enjoyed Dragon Age and Mass Effect more.

The game starts off slowly so people that give up after 30 minutes probably aren't doing it justice

Act 1 was more about setting. I found it interesting learning about the townsfolk. I liked learning the mechanisms of the city, and my character's place in the world. You learn of the common folk's hate, and that is isn't completely unwarranted. You learn of the contrast between the outside of the city and the inside of the city. You learn of poverty and corruption. All of this gives insight into what kind of world The Witcher is set in.

Character wise, you form a relationship with a witch, someone who, like you, is an outsider and an outcast. You get introduced to Shani (iirc), and learn some of her character, a brief appetizer to get you interested. You begin to form opinions of the Church, which will be a very important player later on.

I found act 1 to be the least interesting, but still interesting. I appreciate it more after having beat the game.

It really is just about tastes. The Witcher isn't a game for everyone, and often receives polar reviews.

Why not just read the book then? The interactivity of the game is nice, but considering the combat and equipment were low points, people who didn't care for the game might like the book(s). Just a guess, as I haven't read them myself.

After playing the first 1-2hrs of this game, I almost gave up on it. Gave it another try for another few hours and I was up all night, and it still is one of my favorite game of all time.

Exactly the same as me. It has a slow start and I think that puts lots of people off. Even the combat gets a lot better once you get more options.

The first hour or two is very boring, but picks up after that. Eventually it just becomes a drag, and there is, in fact, too much to do. I have about 40 hours in it, but don't know if I'll ever finish it.

I got a free copy with my graphics card. I installed it, and lost interest after 5 minutes. I couldn't find anyone who would take it from me...

I enjoyed it...haven't finished yet, though. It definitely didn't grab me like Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 (both of which I played back to back start to finish), but I like to play it every now and again. The thing that bothers me the most is the endless walking. If I could quick travel to places, I would be much happier.

I have read the books, but they aren't that great.

While the story of The Witcher is first class for a game, for an actual book it is mediocre.

Also, my favorite part of The Witcher were the moral choices, which the book obviously doesn't have.

i didn't particularly like the combat system, but i loved the story.

i'm more of a story whore anyways. hence why i play RPG's instead of fps's.

Played it for a couple of hours last night.
Initial thoughts echo those here; the combat just seems clunky. The interface seems clunky. Also, I don't know if its a bug or what, but it seems that the cut scenes cut out a lot and jump around. And no, I'm not just clicking my mouse button to get through the scenes.

I don't remember the cut scenes cutting out or jumping a lot,I have replayed it twice through.

The game really starts once you get into town , especially from chapter 2.

If you hated the Witcher, you don't like real RPGs.

And the intro part in the castle sucks. The first act is a bit boring as well; it gets a lot better when you get into the city.

I just got The Witcher from the Steam sale. Everybody raves about how awesome this game is.... but it really is horrible. The combat is so clunky! Aim your camera at precisely the right spot, click button before the scarecrow looking ragdoll enemy moves, then click again at exactly the right time? All the while trying to move around clunkily? And I can't get over the goofy "sword over head" crap. Wow. I guess the designers just didn't realize you look like a retard holding your sword up like an Olympic torch? Why is it so hard to give a hacknslash RPG good combat??

What an awful game. I've noticed a lot of clunky console ports are getting good reviews lately. Are reviewers just stupid or what?

Console port? The Witcher is a PC exclusive.

Also, why do people think this is supposed to be a hack and slash game? It's an RPG, so everyone really needs to stop thinking it's going to have some sort of complex dexterous combat system that holds up the entire game. It's just a slightly more interactive version of point and click combat ala Neverwinter Nights, where your character build and potion use is the more deciding factor.

In other words, I don't buy Call of Duty, and then complain that it doesn't offer a deep role playing experience.

Exactly. I think that many people who don't like it simply don't because they are wanting it to be a different genre of game. It's an RPG. These are typically more story based and don't take as much twitch "skill" as a shooter by their nature.

Indeed. If they make the combat entirely twitch based and reliant a lot on the reflexes of the player, it devalues the choices made during character development. Investing points in various swordplay improvements, damage output and the like, become almost needless to players that are simply good at playing hack and slash games.
Why is it so hard to give a hacknslash RPG good combat??
See above.

Try Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, or Blade of Darkness if you are after fun dexterous combat, with character development choices.

Witcher needs lasers or HMG's... kinda like oblivion needed guns to become good aka fallout 3.

I loved the Witcher. I can't wait for the sequel. However, you need to give the game some time like 5 hours or so to get into it.

it's the sort of game where you either like it or don't

there isn't much in between

I liked it, but its combat system is pretty meh. hope they improve it in Witcher 2.

How many of you that hated The Witcher actually like RPG's? And I don't mean like Fallout 3 -- I'm talking about Neverwinter Nights, etc.

The Witcher is one of the first games put out by CD Projekt. I have high expectations for the second one.

I also don't drool over each new Halo release or Call of Duty #18,363, so maybe I'm different than the normal gamer of today.
