Console port? The Witcher is a PC exclusive.

Also, why do people think this is supposed to be a hack and slash game? It's an RPG, so everyone really needs to stop thinking it's going to have some sort of complex dexterous combat system that holds up the entire game. It's just a slightly more interactive version of point and click combat ala Neverwinter Nights, where your character build and potion use is the more deciding factor.

In other words, I don't buy Call of Duty, and then complain that it doesn't offer a deep role playing experience.

It's a hack n slash game in that you have to constantly click to launch attacks. It's not like the D&D RPGs like Dragon Age. It would be fine if it was automated, but it's not. You have to manually attack and move, yet the combat is the most clunky of any game I've ever played. I wanted to punch my monitor or at least strangle the jerky scarecrow player character with the sword up in the air like you're chopping firewood.

I've been playing RPGs for a long time... Zelda, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy, Ultima VIII, Baldur's Gate, Everquest, NWN, Icewind Dale, Dragon Age (clunky combat but at least it was effectively turn based). So don't try to pull that "you don't know anything about RPGs" malarchy!

A few months back, I picked up The Witcher Enhanced Edition because I saw it for $10. Have not installed it nor played it, just picked it up because of the reviews it got.

So the ones that have played this, What is it like ? Game play ? Boring ? Repetitive ?

Seems I see mixed reviews, and while the majority of them is usually good, every now and then a person says they hate it.

Should I give it a shot ?

I never did pull that "you don't know anything about RPGs malarchy", so I don't know where you got that. Either way, it's still not hack and slash.

Also, Dragon Age isn't D&D.

I can't believe some people are complaining about combat, its not hard guys to fight or dodge ,its not pure hack and slash like Titan's Quest etc remember you do have combat magic as well which was good.... I also like the idea of different weapons for types mobs ie silver for monsters etc.....sure its not perfect but neither was Dragon Ages combat or about 10 other games I can mention.

RPGs like The Witcher are more then just combat no matter how you want to describe the combat, its about exploring ,making decisions, following storyline and taking the time to really get into the game and build/play your character like in real life, not like a simple FPS where a 10 year old can point and shoot and thats it.

End of the day if you don't like it then RPGs games are not really for you.
Try playing the game for more then 3 hours or judging the game by the demo and do get into town as I said ie chapter 2 etc...

It was the game of the year as far as I'm concerned the year it was released.

The next person that says its bad I will shoot him personally and hand him a console for a 5 year old .

You seem to prefer eastern RPGs, I recommend Grandia, Secret of Mana and Suikoden.

The game is a lot of fun after you get into the city (it is a little boring up to that point). What makes it unique is that the choices are very gray, in that there is no obvious "best" answer, just a lot of compromised choices. Also, it attempts to have adult type content and adult type issues, instead of the more childlike simple black and white issues most RPGs have.

I actually liked the combat system, but it is more like God of War than it is like any RPG I know of. It isn't classic at all, in that you have to time your attacks, and move your character around like an action game a little bit.

How many of you that hated The Witcher actually like RPG's? And I don't mean like Fallout 3 -- I'm talking about Neverwinter Nights, etc.

The Witcher is one of the first games put out by CD Projekt. I have high expectations for the second one.

I also don't drool over each new Halo release or Call of Duty #18,363, so maybe I'm different than the normal gamer of today.

I LOVED Neverwinter Nights. Loved every single moment of it. I bought it twice! (Once when it came out, then when it came out w/every expansion pack)

CAN'T. STAND. The Witcher. I just can't get into it. I made it into the city, but I didn't find it any more interesting than the village/countryside level.

I found the witcher to be tedious. It didn't keep me playing.

The alchemy system is so boring and annoying.

i also dont like the cod series to the smart ass who was pulling out the age old argument that somehow rpg players are more sophisticated

many "rpgs" are just action games with various bean counters layered over them to give you a sense of accomplishment

I do like and enjoy RPGs, I just don't find The Witcher to be enjoyable, and doubt I'll ever finish it.

Some of my favorite games are RPGs: System Shock 2, Deus Ex (played through 3 times), FFVII, Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines (played through 3 times), Ultima: Quest of the Avatar (NES), and SW:KotoR.

While NWN isn't a favorite, I did enjoy it enough to finish it. Other RPGs that I played and finished, but wasn't particularly fond of are: Fallout 3, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.:SoC, SW:KotoR 2, and Bioshock.

Other RPGs I hated and couldn't finish include Morrowind, FFVIII, and Deus Ex: Invisible War. One RPG that I kinda enjoyed but didn't finish (despite starting it twice) is Arx Fatalis.

It has nothing to do with whether you like RPGs or not, it has to do with the fact that The Witcher simply isn't fun.

Ya know, someone liking or disliking the game doesn't mean it is well or poorly done. You can like games that are replete with problems, or find that some well set up games are not to your taste.

Way too many folks viewing their opinion as defacto truths.

Me, I thought the Witcher was real well done, with certain major design flaws. Didn't find the combat any worse than other fiddly combat systems. The background was great and the consequential role playing were very strong elements for me. Liked it enough to have the second Witcher on a 'must get' list. YMMV, of course.

You didn't but other posters are.

Dragon Age uses D&D rules, but is a different universe.

Seriously, it has nothing to do with the game. It's simply different strokes for different folks. The Witcher generally has very favorable reviews by critics and users even for the original non-enhanced version, but even "critics" can and do disagree.

"This game sucks." threads should be locked instantly as they are flamebait that go nowhere. Stating "this game sucks" as a fact only shows how juvenile you are and probably the reason you couldn't get into a game like this as it's seems to be more focused on creating atmosphere and developing story.

I'm sure there's lower rated games that some Witcher haters here really enjoyed, and some highly rated games that Witcher lovers' didn't enjoy. Does that make either of them any less of a gamer, or a person? No.

I'll repeat: "Different strokes for different folks."

Personally, there's very few technically proficient games that I don't like and The Witcher is no exception. I've only played the demo a couple years ago and loved it, but my system wasn't powerful enough to run it smoothly, then I read about the enhanced version coming out so I waited and just never got around to playing it. If the game only gets better after the beginning then there's no doubt I'll be a Witcher lover.

Just to be clear, Dragon Age does not use D&D rules, it has absolutely nothing to do with D&D. That's actually one of the main reasons why Bioware went with their own creation, they were sick of dealing with Atari/Wizards.

To the comment that he looks like he stepped off a Norwegian death metal set.

Well as far as i got the guy is a genetic mutant that regularly drinks potions from the north that was last seen with a pitchfork stuck in him and battles unnatural beasts. What exactly did you think he'd look like?

I had a blast playing the Witcher, it gets alot better after the Second Act. It's probably not a game for everyone though.

well how bout this
"the witcher sucks, no wonder its $5!"

I wonder why you made this thread to be honest, there are games I hate but I would never make a thread on the subject, end of the day we ALL like different games and have different expectations.

The Witcher IMHO is still a great game ,shame some gamers don't like it but then that's normal,no game every made is liked by everyone.

Just don't turn this thread into a troll thread or is that what you want?

There has to be a limit to this though, some games do just absolutely suck.

Also it's not flamebait, everyone gauges their opinion to some degree off of public perception of a product. It's the reason review sites still even exist, things like, oh I don't know, Anandtech.
