Update on my Stability problems,I have installed lastest nvidia beta drivers and also running in XP compatibility mode,so far no crashes so hopefully its fixed now, kind of ironic the game has a games for Vista logo yet you have to run in XP compatibility mode.

At least Atari is letting them patch it rather than having them work on an expansion pack.

Looks like the best solution is to just wait 6-months for it to be more mature (bugs fixed) and then purchase a used European copy (so Atari does not get fed), this game does not have activation, right? If not, then we should be good to go to purchase used.

"At least" ? - you mean, Atari is letting purchasers Beta test for them ... they are undoubtedly doing the expansion right now :|

... and that is my plan for *all* Atari games.

i have a new jingle for them:

:music: "Buy Atari and You'll be Sorry" :music:

--kinda catchy ... don't forget it ... it'll save you frustration and money!

This is interesting for me as the game is made in Poland which is where I'm from... having read the novels puts a new look on the game as well as they needed to make a different storyline (Geralt actually dies in the first novel and the rest of the stories are about son he had with a witch).. Comes out Tuesday here.. stupid Hellgate

I was going to order the game from Gogamer, but after hearing about the stability problems that Mem is having under Vista64, I think I'll hold off for another few weeks, see what patches do for the game.

I still need to muddle through the bugfest that is Gothic 3 anyway.

Yes,I'm going to uninstall the game now ,reboot then install game and 1.1a patch again without 1.1 patch which I had installed before.

I have also delted some of my witcher games files 600mb was bit much, down to 11mb now,I'll see if this improves stability if any..

I just got another fresh copy of 1.1a patch again too,I'll let you know later on my stability progress.

I've only had 1 crash so far (20+ hours of play), which occured during a cutscene. Every other time that cutscene ran, it was fine. I'm using Windows XP, so indeed it's a Vista issue.

If you have Vista, you should probably wait a month or two until this is resolved. If you still have an XP install somewhere, go for it.

The frequent loads are annoying, no denying it, especially since every house needs to be loaded, and then the outside map re-loaded when you leave. There must be a better way to do this. They should always keep the outside map in memory to avoid this.

In the end, I actually prefer this game to either Gothic or KotOR. The story has much more of an adult theme with contexts that you'd more likely find in the real world, which don't dwell on the whole good vs. evil thing that has been overused by most RPGs (see Bioware).

Important Update ! :Think I have fixed the problem and it looks like its a game bug with settings,if you change settings, anything like AF,grass detail ,shadow lighting etc from default(even if you lower them) it goes to user custom settings, well it crashes in game for me if I change them to user custom settings ,however if you reset everything back to default settings (everything on max) it seems to be stable so far for me,very wierd one.

I'm going to report this to their official forums,I still need to do some more testing but so far this is looking to be the problem for me.

Btw don't need to run in xp mode or anything like that.

Update: after I killed a human ghost,I tried to loot his body and the inventory menu for him comes up and bang crashed!....I don't know what to try now out of ideas .

I have the exact same problem as do many other Vista users.

Tried numerous workarounds, nothing seems to get it working. The CTDs happen especially often on certain situations, such as opening an inventory, opening any of the menus, as well as seemingly random times.

I was able to get to Act I the first time through, now I'm not even able to get past the tutorial.

The game as a Games for Windows logo but that means jack for a lot of us,they have serious bug/stability problems with this game for a lot of people,I never had any game give me this much grief .

Somebody just purchased the game and had a nice welcome link.

Is the 1.1a patch for ALL versions? I am going to preorder the UK version, but don't want to screw it up w/the wrong patch. The official site doesn't say which version(s) it's for (maybe I missed it?)?

The load times (not to mention all of the technical difficulties) are really too bad. The game looks great and I would love to have tried it, but I think I would just get frustrated with it.

That review pretty much nailed it. The biggest problem is the frequency of map loads. A patch may be able to fix this by increasing memory allocation.

Obviously, for those with Vista, the biggest problem is getting it to run.

The voice acting is passable. Geralt's voice really grates on me though, and he tends to come off stilted.

Edit: It would also be nice to have an option to turn off autosaving, which occurs frequently and adds even more time to level loads. The savegames are getting rather large now as well (>20MB each).

The crashing issue that a lot of Vista users are reporting(some XP users too) is serious, you open inventory, trade with NPC, use alt to highlight or open alchemy etc and potluck when it will crash, basically has ruined the game for those of us with the problem.
Seems like everyday more people are reporting the crashing issues, don't know how they released the game without proper testing.
Examples below.

If anyone find a way to work around this I hope you shout it out load here at the forums. Bought the game today hoping it would be something out of the ordinary, it really is. Those few minutes I can actually play without the game crashing. Totally random crashes for the most, seems to be a bit more at the cutscenes though.

Yep this is exactly the same as me, pressing a key to go to the inventory or journal and the screen can flicker and i know it's going to crash. I have got as far as the dwarf but it's a real struggle, it is frustrating that none of the developer bods have acknowledeged that there is a problem on vista. It will be interesting to see what the feedback si like when it is released in the US this week.

Anyway I installed Jericho and its so nice to have a stable game again that does not crash ,Atari can't you do proper testing on your games before releasing them????
