First, whatever higher powers exist, forgive me. I'm still watching this. Full disclosure, for the first 7 seasons I watched pretty much every minute. Why? I'm not really sure. Until a couple of months ago my HTPC (same room, obvi) was working so I was constantly zoning out, in, out, etc. But even last year (S08) I tried to ff thru parts but my OCD had me by the short curlies for this show. Treasure, mystery, subterranean secrets? OMG, somebody get me a f***ing tampon.
Now, so you don't think I'm completely brain dead, I have to say that the narrator did and does irritate the living f*** out me so bad that if I had children, the next 3 generations would feel it. Wouldn't know what it is they felt, but it would be stamped in their DNA.
With this/S09 I'm finally giving those bastards no more time than I can legitimately justify. So, not much for most episodes. That said, I'm reasonably well convinced that this isn't typical "reality" fare. I mean, somebody(ies) somewhere has spent a couple boatloads of cash on this snipe hunt. If you've watched in the past 4 or 5 years, you know what I mean. Heavy equipment you don't see outside of earth moving projects - for example. 10 ft diameter steel drilling cannisters - you gotta love those suckers. Etc. Beyond that, assuming this isn't some truly epic and historic f*** you to the fans (see LOST), there is also a boat load of science that doesn't really leave you with any conclusion other than, at some point at least more than 200 years ago, people were burying 1 foot square oak beams at depths from 80 but more often 100-200 feet down.
Now think about that. Practical joke? Unlikely unless say the Knights Templar were in on it. And they have found traces of gold and silver at depths similar to those noted, in the ground water right about where the money pit should be (sorry, look it up). Very low concentrations but only there. And while Canada might have gold, the Yukon territory is closer to the West coast.
So . . if I had to bet, I would put a couple benjis on their being successful. But maybe not. What if the only practical approach is tactical nukes? Seriously. They can't excavate the entire island down to 200 feet. OK, they could but a)flooding from groundwater (which, lifting a middle finger to the environment, could be pumped or transported elsewhere) and b) I have no idea if that would cost more or less than what they are likely to spend over the next X number of years.
Honestly though, THAT is really what I want to see. We blow away entire mountains to get other types of shit - right?
