More cool summer for U.S. northeast

Published: July 7, 2009 at 12:34 AM

NEW YORK, July 7 (UPI) -- Cooler than average weather patterns in the U.S. northeast, attributed to the solar cycle, will likely persist for the rest of the summer, forecasters said.

There will be spikes of summer weather, AccuWeather.com reported Monday, but weather patterns that have prevailed so far will probably last.

This year represents a low point for sunspots, NASA said. Studies indicate the lower the sunspots, the less bright the sun, which could translate to less heating of Earth, although many other factors could also be pertinent.

In addition, a dip in the jet stream during the next few weeks will keep New England, New York and the northern portions of Pennsylvania and New Jersey relatively cool. The Mid-Atlantic states will experience more warmth and less rain, AccuWeather predicts.

This summer is not expected to be another year without a summer, such as occurred in 1816 when there was massive crop destruction and killing frosts all summer, the report said.

it's been quite nice, imo. I've had much fewer bug problems this year than I did last, but I hope it's not the sign of an even worse than usual winter... though I guess that doesn't even matter now that I can work from home.

well... it's not as bad as 1816 which was the official year without a summer, but it's bad this summer, real bad. :|

IT really started last summer, August got above 80 once in Boston. I've been commenting on this all summer though. This past weekend was 75 & sunny both days in New England, so I hit the beach with the Mrs. since I figure it's the only chance I may have for a while. I checked the forecast and it's not even going to hit 70 for a few out of the next 10 days. I hate it because summer is when I get most of my 'living' in. I hate winter, and cooler weather. I'm not really comfortable til it hits about 85. I do almost all my partying/banging/adventuring/fun-stuff in the summer, and I haven't been able to do ANYTHING this year. Hell I usually play about 20 hours of basketball per week. This summer I haven't played more than 5 total because of incessant rain, and it's always like 60 by the time I get out of work at 7. I am NOT enjoying this at all.

I WANT MY GLOBAL WARMING!!!!!

Road trip down to TX, you'll get a lifetime's worth in a day or two. It's been a brutal summer so far, and as the saying goes "it's not even August yet." We've had temps in the 100's almost every day.

see, that's too warm for me. in the northeast we "used to" have just-right kickass summers. not too hot and not too cool. the kind of summers you could brag about to those in the sweltering heat.

Wait, Mosh... I'm confused... how is this a bad thing? I've been enjoying the fact that the highest temp so far was around 86F and that it's typically in the 70s . I've always somewhat preferred the spring and the fall (the latter and earlier parts of them respectively) because the temperatures are usually a tad bit milder.

it's bad because it's been raining here and cool for close to all of our "summer" thus far. we are at least 10 degrees below average. SUCKAGE

It could be worse...you could live in Montana. It started snowing in August and our most recent snow (not in the mountains) was in June. Yes, a 10 month winter.
