TheGameBox.Org the TeAm and TechIMO gaming server, what should we do?

Way back when, some members of the TeAm grouped together, raised funds and built a gaming server, headed by LD, site design work by We||cky, administered by HeavyIron, and Two-Face. Once it was in place, it got attention from team mates wanting to play each other. over time that died off, and the box sat dormate. Then TheGameBox.Net started to pick up speed, and full servers started to emerge. TheGameBox.Org was discovered by players of TGB.N and became an "Overflow" server of sorts. This is all fine and dandy.

My question to you, is as a team, are you still interested in TheGameBox.Org, are you interested in helping to decide what games it hosts, hosting games between teams, working with TechIMO on the box? or are you more inclined to let it sit doing / acting as it is as a overflow for TGB.N (which is LD's venture and not attached to the TeAm at all tho TeAm members have / do help with it.

do you want to make it a private server, for TeAm and TechIMO only?
What games do you want hosted on it? Right now its a UT server not UT2K3
Are you interested in hosting TeAm vs. Other teams gaming matches?

wellcky has tried asking similar questions in the past, with little success or input on the matter. if you really just don't care, please let it be known, and why you don't care, and if there is anything the TeAm working on the box can do to help that.

If we want to host games such as UT2K3 we are probably going to need to upgrade the game server a bit to accomidate these games.

Well, I did buy the full version of my favorite multiplayer game for TGB.org (namely Descent 3) but it seemed to conflict with the other dedicated servers, so it never really got a chance to be adopted. And I don't think anyone wanted to play with me anyway, after getting fragged, set on fire, persecuted by gunboys, chased by Smart Blobs, trapped, tricked, sneaked up upon, bombed, microwaved, sniped, and generally annihilated. Ah, the good ol' days...

IIRC, TGB.org is a dual-celeron system, and could probably handle a couple of UT2003 servers with about 8 players (judging by the ReadMe-Demo.txt file's info). I don't have full version UT2003 and probably won't buy it anytime soon, but maybe some of the new owners will want a DM server or two. If there were a private Team-only UT Classic deathmatch server, I'd probably get onto that quite a bit, my hardware can handle UT fine.

Hey, Narzy, you're the dog around here!

Joking aside, i would love to have a well hosted server for the games we (as forum members) are playing. When i say well hosted, i fully appreciate the efforts of muttley and myself (to some extent ) hosting servers on our own computers and internet connections. I for one know that my internet connection isn't good enough really, so by "well hosted" i mean "sitting on a fast connection"

I would like to see a UT2k3 demo and full version server, as this is one game i've bought, mainly because of playing it with the people here, as well as something like a BF1942 or SOF2 server (the other games i play online regularly)

I think it would be cool to have inter-team matches, esp in UT2k3, we have lots of talented players on the TeAm, i was playing against a lot of them tonight, and could get a good UT-Team going

UT2k3 server runs on my Duron 850, using about 15-20% CPU, and about 70MB RAM. There is a free full-version server available for download, which is substantially smaller than the 3cds worth the full game needs to be installed!

I know a little about server configuration for UT2k3, having done it myself a couple of times (my own server at home, as well as running it here tonight at The_One's house) so i might be able to help with that if needed

the server exists, is extremely well hosted (by Xmission) LD and a few others have the keys. I just want to know what exactly you guys want with it.

I know the server exists

I was just saying about having it running the games we're playing at the moment Here has downloads for the free Full Version server, as well as the demo (in case you need them)

Of course after i went on about hosting of game servers, are all my suggestions of what to do with TGB

I have renewed interest in getting fragged on-line by teammates.

UT, UT2K3 Demo & Full would be fine. What about Serious Sam? (never played it on-line)

I prefer to keep it private. If I want to play on a public server, there are many to chose from, along with the "fun" of getting ganged on, squatters, mods, etc.

A private team server, while it hasn't gotten the play time in recent days, is a lot of fun.

After seeing the holes LD put in the beautiful Inwin Q500A I sent him and having to RMA the 10GB hard drive that was full of custom UT maps, I did play UT religiously on a dial-up connection. I'd love to see the old TA -vs- TechIMO matches get started again. We get to be red by the way. I've got a little score to settle with ViRUS.

It would be nice to see the server privatized.

I know the server exists too - I made a substantial contribution to it for the sake of the TeAm.

Personally, I'd like to see it used for matches with other teams! We've done this in the past - had some TASO matches and such - I'd like to see us do that again. Unfortunately, time is a commodity I don't often have alot of, so managing the server hasn't been something I've been able to do. I have no problem making additional contributions in hardware/software to keep it up and running though, so I can be counted on for that part of it.

I also agree that with the exception of scheduled matches with other teams, the server(s) should be kept private(if financially possible) for the TA members - afterall that is what we were donating material for.

I just tried playing UT DM on thegamebox server & it is down atm ,this has happened several times before

I actually prefer the old UT because the weapons were better in that!

Btw the links in gamebox now fire UT2003demo once you have it installed which is a little annoying.

If anyone wants a game of UT now lmk

I would have kept my server up but I don't know what I did to kill it other than that I would have fixed it. My connection is like 384 up and better than T-1 down. I messed with the nic settings to get all my computers to talk to each other but I don't see how that could effect things. I'm so close to the cable company that I have lots of bandwidth sometimes close to double a T-1 connection and processor load was nothing on a 2.0 ghz Athlon and 512 memory, and that wasn't my gaming rig.

Last Q; if we privitize it, how should we handle the password to get into the matches?

E-mail addie w/ auto response was one idea that I had, another was a monthly thread with a new password. both systems are open to abuse however if someone wanted too...
