If the games industry really wants to combat piracy, it should take a leaf out of Valve's book.

While I dislike Steam and its sluggishness, I agree with the article.

When steam was introduced it was really bad IMHO, but I haven't had any problems recently. The concept is good and as it seems to work better it's good.

I've been wondering why nobody's done an online activiation for a game since M$ started doing it with XP. Hell of a lot nicer than all the damn copy protection that prevents legit programs like daemontools from running.

Edit: Then again.... I see they can't play the game yet until Internet Activation can be done. :laugh:

Yeah, when Steam first came out there were a few bugs. However, since it came out (which is WELL over a year ago), it has improved greatly, and I think it's a great system.

One application from which I can keep all my games up to date, purchase them through the internet, and can use my games and my user ID on any PC in the world which has Steam installed.


I'm happy with Steam, I wasn't originally as I was one of the ones that it caused problems for, but it is much much better.

What if someone doesn't have internet access, though it is rare, would they not be able to play the game at all?

Not yet. You need to have internet access at least once to activate the game. After that you can play offline whenever you want. I'm sure some type of phone activation system is in the works, but its not avaibile yet.

i doubt it, because if it was just phone activation then the game would have been cracked already. i'm thinking there are extra game files you need to dl to make it work

 

I find it funny that everyone but the game developers flip out about piracy.

I agree 10000000% with TheInq comments about staggered releases.
The main reason I have a pirated copy of Deus Ex 2 is.....
It was released in the UK about 5 MONTHS after the US release.

I was NOT going to wait 5 months for something, nor was I going to be forced to order it from the US. WTH is the reason for delaying a release for 5 months in a country where you can use the same language version?
AFAIK, the UK version had nothing different to the US version, it was just released months later. Fvcking BS I say.

Yay to Valve for doing release at the same time all over the world, props to them.
