ATI don't release a medicore feature addon. It will excel in something beyond the standards. like AVIVO encoder really supper fast but lacked advance Image quality options/features. Awesome for Ipod/PSP/portable Media player and it is the fastest basic video encoder. I am pretty sure that ATI has a Dedicated Video processor on R600 board which will handle the Video Decoding but ain't too sure if ATI will make the dedicated Video processor also do Audio processing.

I heard that the R600 wont even need a CPU or MOBO. It's going to be a standalone Personal SuperComputer.

They just have to push back the release date a few more months to work out all the kinks..

This sounds like an even worse idea then the AIW. At least there was a market for the AIW, albeit, one I'll never understand. The discreet soundcard market has been slowly dying as more and more people just use onboard sound, and any serious audiophiles are going to want a standalone solution. I'm not sure who would want this.

Yep, HDMI has an audio pass through. The Inq made need to actually do some research some day.

...I'm reasonably sure this is what they are talking about. I doubt the GPU will include a full sound card, just an output device that you can send already-processed digital audio through to embed it in an HDMI connection.

So this is aimed at people that are into gaming with receivers or pre-pro's that will decode audio off HDMI inputs... I think 99% of the people around here aren't going to be able to do that.

Does "full HD sound" mean that it encodes multichannel audio into a DD / DTS stream then, or are they talking about multichannel PCM?

It's also worth mentioning that R600 is supposed to come standard with HDMI, but none of the pics we've seen have had HDMI outputs.

I think some people need to keep their pants on, it sounds like it's just going to be a pass-through solution - great for HTPCs (and even then, not great for cheap HT setups), not so great (if not worthless) for everything else.
