Sad day, my other Samsung 830 I had just lost all its memory.
Last night, all was fine, SMART showed everything within range, nothing out of the ordinary.
Today on boot, nadda. No data on the drive at all.
Windows wanted to init it again.
Currently running testdisk on it to see if it can recover anything. (It was just steam games, so no real loss).

Windows & SMART do see it, it just is blank.

Wow, 4884 hours is just 200 days (sleep/hibernate mode probably doesn't count?). I've got a 120GB version still running in my main rig, I'll have to run SMART and see what it says. Did you have another 830 fail as well?

Yeah, I have had another 830 fail on me as well, except when that one died, BIOS didn't see it anymore. Neither units had ANY advanced warning, SMART was clean on both up until they died.
They sent back a recertified unit from the RMA.
These SSDs never go into sleep or hibernate mode.

That is why I was sad, about 203 days of use, and only 2.3 TB written to the SSD, and it dies.

Testdisk results were, that even though the OS & BIOS can see the drive, all sectors it sees come back as 'read error'. Not sure what to do with these failed SSDs, they don't got any magnets in them to play around with like HDs do.

I think the warranty on this unit has expired as well.

*shrug*.
Still can read SMART parameters, just can't do any actual read/write operations on it.
I am guessing HellHammer might know (Think he works for Samsung now), but haven't seen him in awhile.

Were they this bad? Hopefully their 850s are better than that, since I have one as a storage drive.

Mines been for going over 3.5 years, more on than off. Last time I checked it had about 18TB written. Is now in the downstairs computer.

I know they don't get very hot, but is there a possibility that heat was building up where they were located?

I have two mirrored 830s which have been running 24/7 since February of 2013. This post reminds me that I should probably update the system image and think about swapping them out with some 850 Pros in the near future.

Early death!

I am interested in long-term reliability for SSDs. Right now, the oldest drive in my home server has 59,108 hours on it. It's a WDC5000AACS.

I built a server in 2007 and it had six Western Digital 750 GB drives in a RAID5 array. That server ran 24/7 from 2007 to 2015 and some (2 or 3) of the original WD drives are still in the array. The only reason that box isn't running 24/7 right now is because I wanted to cut down on heat in the room.

Sad reminder to do backups more often. I need to redo mine, they're way out of date.

Have two 830 256GB and one 128GB 830, along with one 256GB 850Pro. All 4 are still alive and kicking. In fact I haven't had a single SSD die on me yet, this includes 256GB Toshiba and ancient 160GB Intel G2 from 2009 which now runs OS in my GF's game box.

My dad had a bunch of sandforce corsair's die on him though. Which is another reminder - all SSDs can fail, but some fail more often than others, buy quality stuff.

I have a sammy going 23035 hours but it only has 5.24TB of write.

I have a Intel with 49543 hours with only 3.97TB of writes.

That 830 Sammy seems sort of young to die that fast at only 4884 hours with only 2.3TB of writes. :T

*knocks on wood like a woodpecker* because the last time i commented something like this, i lost a drive.

wow, that's not much writes at all....points to controller failure.

my oldest ssd is a 80gb intel g2 that is still going strong in my wife's laptop. I should check smart on that one now, i'm curious.

I am still wondering why they can't have meaningful SMART errors?
Nothing mechanical is inside the SSD, so, they could introduce more stats that help users know when a SSD is about to go belly up.
If it goes into panic mode, then there should be a SMART attribute saying so.
If the SSD is detecting any kind of issue, it should throw up a SMART error.

Slightly OT, but, what do people do with dead SSDs? I can't really find a good use for them.

000000000001 CRC Error Count
-> Cable/SATA Port issue. Have you changed the ports?
Can you read SMART values again and post it?

Not getting anything from the SSD anymore, no SMART, not shown in BIOS, nadda.

RIP 830.

Anyone know what the pads do on this PCB?

Since the 830 is dead now, BIOS won't see it, I am wondering if there is a way to bring it out of the dead state?

Sounds like my 840Pro... SMART and Magician gave it a thumbs up in the morning, just locked up when I was working on the computer that night. BIOS didn't see it anymore... I have a refurb, but I just don't trust it.

I have two 830s still doing their thing with no apparent issues. They are OS drives in a T510 Thinkpad. One is Win wo and the other 7. They are cloned to a pair of EVO 850s, so if they fail, they casn be immediately replaced.
