There is no availability problem!

Everybody keeps on mentioning the "availability problem"... what availability problems? both AMD and nVidia are churning out cards at massive rates with absolutely no hiccups... they are just selling out as soon as they are done since its been over a year and a half since the last refesh and that one didn't include a single mid range card... only low end and high end cards. (the gts was still a high end at 350$... and the 8600 was a LOW end card at mid range price, being outperformed by the 7900GS...)

I just ordered a 8800GT... to replace a 7900GS. Which is what most people are doing, replacing hardware that is two generations old with the current gen mid range.

What we are seeing here is simply very high demand due a badly needed product finally arriving...

I hate to break it to you, but when a product isn't readily available in a most of the normal suppliers, that IS an availability problem!

Has anyone published any sales numbers for the 8800 GT? How many have been sold so far? Are they truly making them in massive quantities but people are just buying them SO fast they they can't keep them on the shelves???

I really doubt it.

Keep in mind that while there is a HUGE number of folks on this forum (and other computer related forums) that are buying (or trying to buy) the 8800 GT right now, as a whole, we are a tiny FRACTION of the total buying public. And for some reason, I really don't think that your average "Joe Consumer" have all decided that they just HAVE to upgrade their video card RIGHT NOW and the 8800 GT is the ONLY card they will buy.

Here is a bit of an analogy for you: Remember the gas shortages of the seventies? Just because YOU had a full tank of gas didn't mean there wasn't a gas shortage for all the other people sitting in line at the gas stations for hours on end.

Well it seems that the channel wasn't fully supplied with the new cards before the launch and it's showing with how many coming soon ads I see. I'm replacing my 7800gt with two msi 8800gt's from the dell sale if they'll ever ship them. I replace my graphics card every two years unless it either dies or something astounding comes out so I'm just on my normal replacement schedule with my purchase. I had a card die in my youngest sons machine and I had to scrounge in order to find an 8800gt for him and even then I paid through the nose for it. I'm noticing that the egg is starting to see some stock now however they're gouging big time which is a turn off for me. Hell I just got my new monitor from the bestbuy online store with local pickup for over $100 less than what newegg wanted and that is sad.

I think you're right on Snoop. I know a lot of hard core gamers still using 6800s and 7900s with no plans to upgrade.

I know there aren't enough cards to go around... my point is that its not because of some manufacturing issue. And it applies both nvidia AND AMD in this regards. Both of them are manufacting the new cards and they are all selling out of stock... stock will stabilize eventually because they will keep producing them in the same steady manner. (since there isn't some "supply problem" preventing them from from resupplying).

The biggest thing to note is the RATE at which stores go out of stock and then get new stock in... almost daily stock runs out in places like tiger, newegg, zipzoom, etc... And then almost daily they get new stock... if there was a supply problem then they wouldn't be getting new stock so fast. Instead we just have a case where demand outstrips supply.

I don't understand. There IS an availability problem if there aren't enough units to meet demand. You're saying there isn't a supply problem. Might want to change the title of the thread.

How would you know they don't have manufacturing issues? You assume quite a bit. Many websites said that Nvidia chip suppliers aren't getting through as much as AMD.
