There's a sick/rabid possum in my garbage drum...

Possums usually don't get rabies, they have a body temp that is too low for most diseases to take.
They also have a much better immune system than most other animals.
They get a bad rap when they really don't deserve it.

I read up on them after I saw my cat sharing its food dish with one like they were friends.

We lived on 10 acres and had a dozen or so outside cats that ate out of a community food bowl. I would come home late at night and find a possum or 2 eating right along side the cats.

I think they are cool critters. Boo to those that say kill the possum.

I've messed with possums before just to screw with them. They'll hiss, roll over, play dead but if you reall mess with them they'll get mean.

How the hell did it get in there in the first place? As someone said, they aren't exactly agile creatures.. there's no way it could jump in there, or could jump out. Maybe it climbed the fence.

Possums actually run fences to travel to and from places they have found food. It is very likely that the little guy simply fell off the fence and happened to land in the trash can. Put the can on it's side and he will be on his merry way as soon as you leave him alone.
