There's one thing going right for Trump

It turns out that the US economy is in a good place and trending upwards. People are out there, and spending. The stock market is going on its best winning streak in 25 years.

So, is Trump really making America great again or is this just fake news from CNN?

http://money.cnn.com/2017/02/17/news/economy/donald-trump-economy/index.html

Headlines claim the White House is in "chaos" after an extremely turbulent week. But there's one big thing going right for Trump right now: The U.S. economy.

A slew of economic data came out this week. Almost all of it was positive. Americans are still going to stores and spending big (retail sales came in better than expected for January). They're also buying houses. And cars. And using their credit cards.

On top of that, small and medium-sized business owners are giddy. The NFIB Small Business Optimism Index is at its highest level since 2004.

Heck, even manufacturing has made a pretty big turnaround and looks almost healthy again. The Philly Fed Index, a survey on how well manufacturers are doing, just hit its highest level since 1984. And anyone with money in the market likely noticed the U.S. stock market set even more records this week. In fact, American stocks are on their best winning streak in 25 years.

No doubt this is good news. In terms of giving Trump credit, I suppose you could say at least he didn't screw it up, but claiming credit for the market performance after a month in office is... well, I guess par for the course for Trump.

Maybe he is our Dark Knight. The distraction we needed, not the one we deserved, so we could get back to work and Make America Great Again.

No shit small business optimism is high Trump is their savior and liberals are the reason they've been failing for the last 30 years. Let's see how they're doing in 4 years when cutting taxes doesn't make money rain from the sky.

He's promised the moon yet not tried to deliver, thus far he's spinning tires in the mud just trying to stand up the top level of the administration. Let's wait until after he starts trying to examine the effect of his policies (assuming he ever reveals what those terrific, so good, amazing policies actually are).

All credit due to Obama. It was on an upswing before the election. A good economy can never the by-product of a very brief few weeks of a newly arrived POTUS, but more due to policies that take much longer to bear fruit. Lets check back in a year from now.

Amercia was already great..

It may be great, but there is something to be said in KNOWING it was great. Whether or not we make it great, or realize it was already great, the outcome is the same. We must again either remember, or establish American exceptionalism. Works both ways.

Well, Trump just threw America under the bus when it comes to "American exceptionalism". If I remember correctly He said we're killers too.

Notice a word which does not appear anywhere in this article? The word "Obama." This is an article about economic data being released less than one month after Trump has taken office, and CNN gives Trump 100% of the credit, without qualification. That's why conservatives lie when they claim the news media has a liberal bias. This article is transparently biased in favor of Trump. There are several other largely pro-Trump articles on CNN's front end today. This after Trump held a press conference once again dishonestly labelling CNN as "fake news." They're quite obviously trying to prove the opposite by giving Trump exactly what he wants. What a disgrace.

Just report the facts, CNN. Stop worrying about what Trump and the right think of you. Stop worrying about what anyone thinks of you.

This whole thread just makes me laugh. It's like the climate debate where someone points to a hot winter as evidence...It's not. it's a data point. you need a lot of data points to make any inference. Anything less is just hopes and dreams.

An example of this is the Reagan years. He was among the worst presidents for the working class, because within the first month after his inauguration the market dropped and kept dropping through the summer. Of course if you add some more data points, he was a great president for the economy because by the end of the term the DJIA was up like 180% over when he took office.

Didn't Obama see one of the largest bumps in the DJIA after his inauguration? Was that the Obama effect? a 60% expansion in market value over his term...was that the greatest presidency of all time in terms of market gain over a presidential term?...no i guess that would probably be Clinton...but a close second.

I guess my point is...markets go up and markets go down. I will be more of a believer when his policies are in place and running, so companies can adjust to the new environment and either do better or do worse. I have no doubt that this presidency will spend a lot of time and resources working out ways to improve the profitability of businesses in the US. It think the Financial markets will do the best and maybe small businesses next. I would think that expansion in small business will have the biggest impact on "real people" looking for jobs and trying to get by. Those that have money already will just do better than they would have under a different regime.

I'm really interested in the unemployment numbers. The conservatives have spend 8 years redefining what "real" employment is to show how bad a job Obama did. Now I expect them to turn back to the older standard definition of unemployment to show what a great job Drumpf is doing. That's just a guess, but with all the flip flopping across the board it's hard to tell what anyone really intends anymore.

My concern is most people have forgotten 2007-08. Consumer confidence is high. The US savings rate is abysmal. Many aren't saving. Why should they. New flat screens, cars and homes make us feel good. Money in the bank? Pfftt... What's that? You mean I need an emergency fund. Please.

The average car loan is $500 over 5 years. That's stupid. Invest at least $300 a month in an Roth IRA, 12% ROI from 25-65 and you'll be worth at least $3m. Yet, many are going to have little in the way of retirement and they'll be relying on the government to bail their asses out. And, we all know how well the government is with their finances. I haven't even talked about student loan debt.

IMO, you should have 2-3 years saved for worst case scenarios. You should be paying yourself first at least 30% of your paycheck. Pack that away. Save to invest. Wealth isn't measured by how much shit you have in the garage and driveway.

Not a huge Dave Ramsey fan, but I will say he makes sense when he states that many Americans make stupid decisions with their money.

Few of his policies have even taken effect.
It is way too early to credit him for anything.

But naturally, getting rid of regulation will increase profitability of big energy at the cost of mass health risks.
The market may go up but that does not help anyone but the executives of the affected businesses.

Big energy goes, Healthcare industry goes up. Win-win.

It didn't take Trump long to get the economy moving again after 8 years of straight catastrophic losses.

Thanks, Trump.

Thanks Obama!!! Oh, US tourism is down $185m since Trump took office - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/d...ok-office-and-things-are-likely-to-get-worse/

That's a big deal and something many people haven't thought about. Tourist pump a lot of money into our economy. I live at the Jersey shore and we get a lot college kids from Romina, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, France and so on. They play an important part in our local economy because American teens and early 20 somethings do not want to work. Local businesses rely every summer on college kids from other countries.

Who would they come to America if they are going to feel threatened? Why would they?

Tell this to an actual economist and they'll laugh at your face. Get a clue on his vague economic policies once they're actually implemented and then speak.
