There's something wrong with my PC

My PC was running perfectly fine. Ran all programs really well whilst listening to MP3's etc.

But I tried to put in a new hard drive ( 60GB WD IDE using a SATA convertor )

For some reason this hard drive didn't show up so I took it out again and restored the computer back to its normal setup.

But now my computer is running really really slow. It takes about 5 minutes to boot up windows, can't play mp3's whilst doing other things because it just stutters and the mouse cursor lags. Photoshop takes forever to load and to edit photo's etc.

The only time programs run fine (Photoshop, games, winamp) is when they are the only things running. The multi tasking seems to be screwed all together even tho it was fine before i attempted to put in this hard drive.

I've checked all the temperatures and they are all normal. CPU is sitting around 40oC, motherboard at around 25oC. I've just pulled out my IDE leads and put em back in to check for dodgy connections but they are all fine.

This problem has really baffled me.

Any help would be muchly appreciated.

Did you check if you crimped your ide cable ?
When you are using the SATA convertor, is there a way to setup master or slave on the drive?
Did you test your hard drive with Hitachi Hard Drive Fitness Test or any other program?

No i haven't used that hitachi thing. I few weeks ago i plugged it in replacing a cd drive and formatted. I was orginally gonna put it in my PS2 but its just been sitting on my desk in the packaging for a few weeks until i got given this convertor thing and thought i might as well put it in my PC.

My IDE cables should be fine cos they are rounded ones and shouldn't have been damaged.


I've restored my PC to how it was before i tried putting in this hard drive and it was working fine for a day and then i turned it on the next morning and took 5 minutes to boot up which i thought was odd.

A really slow system can also result from a faulty CD drive. We had these symptoms before and removing the cable from the CD drive fixed this issue. When you said it took 5 minutes to boot up, do you mean it took that long to get through the bios part or until you had a windows desktop?

The bios bit was fine. When the black XP screen comes up, at that point it takes forever.

I've replaced my 40gig system disk with a new 60gig drive but when all my faffing about i've lost 70gig of mp3's.

I really feel like crying!!

No hard drive recovery thing worked so i'm really devastated.

Can you download the SEAGATEtool from seagate website, or WD will have a yoot you can dl to see if your drives are in need of execution
