thermal compound for my new x2 3800+

got a toledo x2 3800+ today from zipzoomfly.com...yippee!

am wondering what thermal paste, if any, i should use on the supplied HSF.

I am really looking forward to quick replies. thanks guys.

PS: oh yeah, am definitely gonna overclock this baby.

yeah, i've used that one...wouldn't have asked...it's just that i squeezed the last drop out of my old arctic silver tube about a month ago...don't feel like spending another 11 bucks (after a huge pocket burn) on the paste.

I guess i should have asked this: Should i try to run the x2 without any thermal paste?

I'm not very experienced with processors but I think that anyone'd give out a huge CRAP NO! to that one, AMD themselves are sure as hell against it.

Do not run any modern CPU withotu some kind of TIM. Even the pad that comes on stock AMD heatsinks is fine(It's Shin Etsu, and it works well).

Most TIMs out there on the market work well thesedays, though AS5 may still give you an edge.

Also, tooth paste dries out quickly and loses its value as a TIM. It's not useful for anything but oddball testing.

The pad AMD uses on the stock HSF in fine. If you're overclocking though, get a better heatsink and some Arctic Silver.

if you are getting an aftermarked cooler, it comes with thermal paste. its usually very good, and will get you withing 1C of AS5.

so i can run my amd x2 3800+ w/ the supplied HSF, no need to put the gel, rite? alrite, will not overclock the cpu for now, that is, until i get the arctic silver.

Look, all yu need is a thermal pad or thermal paste, any kind ! You can even OC, just so long as the temps aren't bad, go for it !!
