Check this experience with the thermal pad:
I found it posted by
rodmoe@worldnet.att.net on the alt.comp.hardware.amd.thunderbird news group.
Could a "Bad Pad" have caused his porblems?

Been building computers for 5-6 years.
Always used intel cpu's in the past.
My son Glen had been grousing because I' ve set up cases for everyone from
inlaws/coworkers to a cop down the street.
Got a wild hair and decided to try my luck with AMD, what with the prices
that intel is charging and all.
Buy a retail-boxed 1.1 T-bird and Asus A7V from multiwave.
Pop the bird in the socket, closed the zif handle, remove the cover from the
thermal tape (I decided to go with the tape because of concerns about
voiding the warranty), and then carefully mounted the AMD heatsink/fan. Got
my Antec 400w power supply. Top quality stuff all around. How can I go
wrong?
Then, I plug the power cord in, and the fan stars to run...and run...and
run. It wouldn't shut off.
Hmm...
So, after disconnecting the power cord and reseating the memory & vid card,
and checking all the connections, I try the power cord again, and, again the
fan comes on and won't go off.
Now..., and this may have been a mistake, I hit the power button. Nada, no
boot, no beeps, no nothing.
So, its gotta be the evil Asus mobo, right?
I go out and buy a MSI K7T Pro for top dollar at a local computer retailer
($128, but hey, this is a gift for my kid, right...). Hook everything up,
put the power cord into the UPS, and the fan starts to run...and run.. and
run. I reseat the usual suspects and get the same result as before. When I
hit the power button, Nada, nothing, no boot, no beep, no nothing. The MSI
board gives me 4 red lights on the LED....A dead CPU.
BTW: on this pass I'm running a PC power and cooling turbo 350 power supply.
I may be dumb, but I'm not cheap.
So, I call AMD tech support. They give me the third degree and then issue an
RMA. I track the thing UPS and they receive the shipment Dec 11.
I wait for a replacement to arrive. Now be patient, Glen these things take
time...
Today, at long last, I get a package from AMD. Its the busted processor that
I sent them early in December!
I call their tech support (again, another toll call) only to be told that
the processor had suffered thermal damage due to misuse on my part and
therefore was not covered by the warranty.
I took the chip and mobo over to a computer shop and showed the owner
exactly what I had done in the way of preparation and mounting and he found
fault with none of it. He also said that If I had bought an oem processor
from him, he'd have given my money back. He did take the MSI board
back...hell of a nice guy that Mike.
BUT NOT AMD. I'm just screwed out of $258.00.
And, Multiwave won't take the Asus board back since its been too long since
I've purchased it, that's another $145.00.
WTF: I won't use the language that I used on the phone with the "Tech", but
I will tell you this... I will never use an AMD product again and would
discourage anyone else from doing so as well. This is one rat hole that I'm
not pouring any more money down.
Gonna go online now and buy an 815 board and a CU1000. It'll kill my wallet,
but at least Intel honors their warranties.
Pissed,
Rod
