thermal paste on Pentium Dual-Core E2200

So i'm getting ready to put everything together, but i couldn't find separate thermal paste in the CPU box, i did find however on the underside of the heatsink, the side that attaches to the surface of the CPU, some "pad-looking" substance seemingly adhesive though solid to the touch, is that stuff the thermal paste?

Yes.. It is a thermal pad. speads itself when it gets hot.. If i were you id remove that and apply AS5 or another premium thermal compound

I think Intel uses a thermal paste made by Shin-Etsu on their coolers. Not 100% sure though.

Yeah, remove that junk and get some Arctic Silver 5. If you don't have a pc parts store near you, Radioshack carries Arctic Silver 5 for, I think, $7. That certainly isn't a bad price. It's also very convenient, since your other choice may have had to be to buy it online and pay shipping.

Using AS5 over the thermal paste applied to the heatsink makes quite a difference btw (unless it's a Freezer 7 Pro or some other Arctic Silver product, which would have Arctic Cooling MX-2 applied), so you won't regret it.

works perfectly fine. running my 2180 at 3ghz. coretemp says 27c idle(doubt that).

Well being adhesive is not its purpose, xfering heat [better then metal->air->metal) is its purpose. Those crappy twist retainers are to make sure the HSF adhere's to the CPU. If your not OC'ing, I would definatly not worry about removing the TIM (thermal interface material) from the underside of the HSF (heatsink+fan). If you are overclocking, and want to give a single point of data to these fine folks, Run your tests w/ the Intel TIM, then w/ whatever other TIM's you want.

actually it's not, it's pre-applied thermal paste.
