Thermalright SLK-800 vs SLK-900: big difference?

is there a noticeable difference between these two heatsinks, as far as performance?

right now i have an Epox 8RDA+ w/ Athlon XP 2100+ (stock speeds) and an Arctic Cooling Copper Silent TC. my idle temps are about 48C-50C.......a tad high for my liking.

i have a Zalman 92mm fan that pushes more air and is quieter than the fan on the Arctic cooler. It has a bracket that allows me to position the fan right above the heatsink, so the fact that the SLK-800 can't support it doesn't really matter. (i.e. if i get the SLK-900, i'll mount the 92mm Zalman fan directly on the heatsink, but if i get the SLK-800 i can use the bracket and position the fan right over the heatsink.......does this make sense? )

so, my question is, is the SLK-900 worth the extra money?

With the Same Fan, the 900 Series would be about .25 - .5 C better (if at all).

The Key is with the 900 series you can use a 92mm fan, basically you can push the same CFM but be quieter or have the same noise level as an 80mm fan and push more CFM.

hmmm.....i looks like the difference is only $7

are there any issues i should know about the SLK-900? besides it being heavier than the 800?

The motherboard compatibility is less. Look for the 947U although it may be slightly more expensive it has more motherboard compatibility than the 800U AND the 900U. It is basically the 900U redesigned to allow more clearange of items that may be around the socket area.

If you try hard enough you might get a 1-2c diff.

But, an slk800 will not fit the 92mm tornado. Mine hovers so it's much more easy to move around. Nice added benefit.



j/k I use a fan controller and rarely have it past 2600. I cannot stand noise, especially that high pitched sound.
