I'm honestly suprised they gave a ThermalRight heat sink a positive review, considering
it was being compared to the god-like Ninja.

Madshrimps.be and SPCR don't care for ThermalRight products because of the support
overclockers.com gives TR. jmke the site Admin. at madshrimps has a special title at SPCR.
I find that fact kind of interesting.

The thing I don't like most about that one is the fact that on most S939 heatsinks, it'll end up blowing air up towards the power supply, not directly towards the rear fan like my Ninja does. Sending that hot air into an already hot component doesn't seem very smart to me.

??

As someone who wrote a few mostly positive Thermalright HS reviews for SPCR, that's news to me. Where'd you hear that?

His "special title" is *Lifetime Patron* which is available to anyone that has donated a certain amount of money to SPCR. Other levels include "Patron" and "Friend". Here's the page on SPCR that describes it's donation program. AFAIK, this is quite a common method of supporting websites. I myself have donated funds to dozens of sites and have absolutely no ties to any of them.

jmke told me via PM he had an axe to grind for ThermalRight. The issue revolved around an older copper heat piped sink that did out perform the XP-90. It was probably dropped because of production costs. It got so hot, TR would not provide madshrimps with units for review.

Good for you!! Doing reviews can be fun. I've reviewed shop tools for car restoration magazines and that makes me special too

I do read over at SPCR and know thier obsessive attitude about silence. I resent the fact they bad mouth server grade PSUs for being noisy...That's insane. They should stick to just reviewing gear built for silence. The same is true for CPU heat sinks. End of story.

I respect some of the work SPCR does but thier born again disciples pushing all SPCR does on forums all over the web is a bit much. It's like nothing matters but what SPCR offers..and a big no thank you to that! The P180 is a good example of SPCR's hands on work.

GY...I frequent SPCR quite a bit, and I find the only bias there is for quiet computer stuff. I find your impression difficult to figure. The two companies bad-mouthed there are ThermalTake for their mostly copy-cat designs and their obviously false noise specs. SilenX also has a bad reputation due to a stupid marketing episode involving SPCR. That's about it.

It's quite obvious to me that the SPCR people are into quiet computing, not gaming or over-clocking, which seems to find favoritism at Anandtech. If you ask quiet questions here, the usual answers are amusing to me. You need to ask quiet queations at SPCR...not here. An example is the recent "butterfly" heatsink design.....bad-mouthed here because it "looks gay". At SPCR the 'Butterfly" thread consentrated on how well it worked, and how quiet it was.....

agreed, bluefront, i'm a fan of both silence and performance; a frequent customer of both SCPR and performance sites like anandtech and others...

scpr is a great resource if silence is what you're after, but maximum performance is another story. That's the beautiful thing about the internet; the massive list of different opinions and niche sites directed at this audience or that.

the scpr guys are straight up and down as far as their purpose goes, but don't badmouth the dudes if you aren't into what they're preaching.

By the same token, the zealots of silence should not be running around the web selling
monastic silence.

Stick around awhile masterwerk before getting on my case...Mmkay.

I guess I'm a "zealot of silence". I ruined my hearing when I was a younger. Loud motorcycles, insanely loud live music, no hearing protection ever. Now i suffer hearing loss and Tinnitus. So I do everything possible to lower noise levels around me....that includes obnoxous loud computers.

Zealots of silence are trying to help everyone save their hearing......when you start loosing it, you'll come around to silent stuff.

At 59 a touch of tinnitus hits every once in awhile. Like when an asshat does the poping clapping hands routine near me. Cigarette filters in the ears goes not consitute protection when shooting any guns, particularly my home loads in 45LC or 41 Mag. ( I don't use tabaca, coffee or excessive sugar)

Foam ear plugs and a fullface helmet are worn when a ride is over 5 minuets long. Noise is very tiring and concentration is lost easily.

My gripe here is ppl raving about a $15 NeXus fan when it's no more than a $5 Yate Loon with a resistor dropping voltage. But silence sells for big bucks and the zealots promote these higher priced goods.

Well yeah there are silence morons. My favorite is the guy who complains his Nexus is too noisy at 7V. It's doing maybe 600rpms.....inaudable unless your ear is right on it.

I take a reasonable approach to silence.....if I can't hear it at three feet, it's quiet enough. SPCR has never hidden the facts about Nexus/Yate Loons. On the other hand, you have companies like ThermalTake that consistantly lie aboue their noisy products. It pays to get info about different products from the right source.

I don't think anyone ever suffered hearing loss from an obnoxiously loud computer... Even the loudest fans would top out at 60-70db which is a far cry from loud motorcycle or extremely loud live music...

This is a pretty bogus reason for a silent PC. I f you really cared about hearing you'd be distributing ear plugs at those concerts or promoting awareness to hearing loss.

Once someone has sustained hearing loss, there can be certain noises that are very irritating... to the point of causing tinnitus to kick in. I know this for a fact. Noise also causes a reduction in concentration.

Good fans on decent controllers work for me.

ON TOPIC: The Ultra 120 is a fine heat sink

It's more than just the overall db level that causes trouble. Certain frequencies can do it. Some hard drives emit frequencies young people find quite annoying. I'm too old for that.....but when I'm sitting here reading, or problem solving, a noisy computer fan from under the desk is a no-no. Never said computers caused hearing loss....

Don't let your religion get in the way of your common sense! Complaining that a real server-grade PSU is noisy is absurd.

In most cases this can solved by rotating the heatsink 90 degrees (if space permits it). All you need is this Themalright S-type heatsink clip
