Will this work for a 1133 T-bird? I have an older model thermaltake HS/F but the CPU only has a little raised square making contact with the HS and it runs around 158 F most of the time (with Arctic Silver II). I don't know squat about cooling but that seems pretty high to me and I do have problems when it gets hotter. Do I need a shim to make it get better contact with the HS other then the little raised area or is a shim for something else?

What about thermal paste? I don't build new machines very often and have none around. Should I get some?

Last question (for now). Do I need a shim or not.

yes get thermal paste, get the smallest size if you dont want to spend taht much its like $5-$18 for a 3g tube of arctic silver3 or artic ceramique, i'd recommend the ceramique

dont get a shim, unless you plan on moving your computer around a lot and you're nervous about your core chipping due to a heavy (copper) heatsink...

regardless of whether or not you buy the silent boost...

however, i admit i dont nkow if the tt silent boost comes with its own paste, and if it does, i dont know what it is, but buying a tube, allows you teh freedom to reseat your heatsink for a bunch of times (especially for amd cpus) without having to worry about running out of paste... also comes in handy for your northbridge, southbridge (for nf2 mobos), and vga chips if you later want tocool those better than stock

hmm, let me check if the silent boost came with its own paste.
actually, can't find the box anymore. sorry. i just used ceramique. you only need 1 little bottle and it'll last you a long time. the amount you actually put on is tiny. it'll probably be cheaper if you buy it from fry's (no shipping).

it's a pretty good heatsink. cools really well, and pretty silent

Yes, it will work with your Tbird

158° F is pretty hot. Do you have any case fans?

You do not need a shim.

Thanks for your input edplayer. I do have a case fan that is built into the side panel but when I put that panel on and hook up that fan, it seems to have more trouble, so I just leave it off. I'm not at that system right now but I think the case temp is around 95 F or maybe higher at certain times. The room that it is in is fairly warm because of all the other electronics that are running. TV, VCR, monitor, occasionly a couple other computers also. I saw a HS/F for socket 462 on ebay that was all copper and had a 7000 RPM fan. It said that it isn't quiet since it runs so fast but that doesn't really bother me (yet ;o). Is all copper and high speed fan what I should be looking for?

does that fan that is on the side of your case blow in or out? You should have at least one fan blowing air OUT of your system. You should get an all copper HS and it should be fairly large (like a 80mmx80mm size, not for everyone but your system is pretty hot). And a high speed fan definitely helps. 7000rpm will be pretty loud, but you could add a resistor inline to slow it down if its too loud for you.
