They are good, but the Zalmann 700 and the XP90 and XP120 are quite popular, and probably a little better. Just a LOT more exspensive......

I have the Thermal take CL-P0025 Silent tower and its very quiet as it has the large low rpm fan. Or there is the CL-P0071 which is a fanless heatpipe so obviously dead quiet.

I like mine. Quiet and effective. It's a good choice if you don't think the larger hs/fan's will fit in your board.

From what I've seen, you can move more air at about/lesser decibals (sp?) with the XP90 or XP120 with a good fan.......

Would the Thermaltake SILENT BOOST be the best?
Just like any other product about which it is at all possible to make a subjective judgment, for the average person there is not now any single "Best" CPU Heat Sink of almost any nature. If money is no object, the situation changes. Frosty Tech can provide the ratings they obtained from exhaustive tests to provide an objective basis, but "loudness" is perceived differently by different people, and COST is also variable. The Silent Boost isn't a "cheap" product - there are some cost- conscious PC users who don't want to pay $25 (and more) for it.

My personal opinion, after buying that model, is that it really does offer a good compromise on noise output without giving away an excessive amount of cooling capacity. Never having played with water cooling, heat pumps, or for that matter, any hsf's costing more than about $40 from a brick & mortar, low to moderate price air cooling has been my own preference and I can't comment with authority on any of the higher cost ones. Among the fan-equipped hsf's that I have tested, two were "quiet" in my opinion, and the Silent Boost was as quiet as an Aeroflow while cooling better in the same case, on the same XP cpu, with the same case fan setup, same general location in the room, ambient temps same, etc.

Having silent in the name doesn't quiet it down a bit.

My recommendation would be the popular Zalman already mentioned or an XP-120 and a very slow RPM 120mm fan. That would be about as quiet as air cooling can be. If you're serious about quiet and willing to invest, get a fanless or water cooled PSU and a water cooling kit. That will set you back some $$$, but it'll be damn close to totally silent.

Yes, the Silent Boost is very quite and fairly effective, even when overclocking. Especially for $30.00.

You obviously don't have experience with Silent boost....

I have owned both the Silent boost and Zalman 7000al/cu. Both are great, similar performance but Zalman was a bit more quiet thanks to the fan mate. Anyway I liked the silent boost more than I ever liked the Zalman.....

Please convince me that an 80mm fan spinning at 2500RPM is silent.

Just by looking at pure physics, I know that is not silent.

ThermalTake and Vantec would be two brands I would not take for silence (their fanless stuff is okay though). Their fans are crappy though.

It is a panaflo (the fan). I don't care about physics here since when I used it it was controlled by the MoBo according to the heat. It was spinning around 1900rpm which was very silent. It also performed great and the biggest + was the ability to change the fan (against Zalman). I liked it a lot.

I got a Zalman CNPS 7000-AlCu off ZZF for $30 shipped. The thing is nearly dead silent when I crank its speed all the way up, and completely inaudible turned down. Plus, it cools excellently. Going to the full copper version will yield a couple extra degrees, but I don't feel it's worth it. Mostly, I'm just scared of their weight, as this is a pretty large heatsink. An XP-90/120 with a quiet fan would be an excellent (although more expensive) alternative.

I have a Thermaltake silent boost, its not Silent! Everflow fan 2800 rpm, clicks alot when you turn down the voltage.
