Thermaltake Volcano 7 to PAL8045 = 9C temp drop :)

Got my PAL installed today I run MBM to monitor temps, and with BIOS rev1008, my temps were running 53/60C idle/load, respectively with the TT. Then with a flash up to 1014, my temps dropped 9C, so I'm assuming it had MBM reading off the socket thermistor instead of the die thermistor like it was with 1008. So I adjusted CPU temp +9C to account for the false reading

That was with the TT Volcano 7. I get my PAL8045 w/ Panaflo 80mm H1A (same fan I was using on the TT) and even with the +9 compensation, my idle/load are 44/52, with Sandra saying that at idle, my board temp is 29C and the chip is only 30C This is my 23C room.

I'm just so damned happy, I cant believe what a difference it made Another thumbs up for the 8045. It was actually kinda fun to install too, and I didnt even have to worry about stabbing my mobo to death with a screw driver, hurray for that.

Muwahaha, they're a heck of a heatsink I should get another one but I feel foolish buying a $35 heatsink for a $55 CPU. What CPU are you using and is it overclocked?

Yup, running an AXP 1500+ @ 1.7ghz (XP 2100+ ) 10x170 @ stock voltage somehow

And the A7V333, heh, its REAL close to that 3rd DIMM slot, its definitely still usable, and I wouldnt see any problem with putting some RAM in there, just got it put on and was like WOW, that IS close

So if I was going by the numbers MBM was really giving me, I'm running @ 35/43.

got that on right now. is keeping my 1600xp @1.78 under 50 underload. then again, it has a tornado on it.

Had a swifty before. performance is very close. but alpha's a good 10 bucks cheaper.

so someone in here said for the "pin" type heatsinks like alpha, the fan should be set up to suck, rather than blow into heatsink. now I could've swear the instructions said blow into heatsink. anyone here experiment with this?

Alpha's specs show it has a slight advantage set for "expulsion," which I take to mean that the fan blows air out the top. Maybe try it both ways and see what's best? But I'm sure it's pretty darn good either way

tks for the link, I think I will try it.if it works better the other way, it be so much easier for me to rig up a duct system to expile hot air out of the case.

Yeah, I have mine blowing onto the HS, didnt even think about it when mounting the fan, it'd be pretty easy to switch it around and try it the other way though

Oh yeah, before I put the HS on, I did a pretty decent lapping job on the bottom with 1500grit wet/dry

Supposedly having it blow onto the heatsink is better...but who really knows.

I have a volcano right now, only thing I don't like about the PAL's is that you can't move the computer around much..plus they'd take over half my board.

What makes it so that it prevents you from moving the computer around? Its bolted to the mobo, alot safer IMO than 2 plastics clips on the edge of the socket. And the PAL is 5mm larger on each side, doesnt really take up a whole lot of extra real estate

Hehe, I remember when Swiftech came out with their original MC462, the first four-bolt AMD heatsink. For some freakish reason, they felt the need to prove, WITH PHOTOS FOR DOCUMENTATION, that a computer could be thrown out a second-story window with their heatsink installed, and the CPU core would not be cracked.

Think I'm making it up? Think again Frankly, I'm not sure if this reassures me, or just convinces me that the Swiftech heatsinks are made by insane people...

:Q WOW! Thanks mechBgon!

Anyway, yeah, the PAL8045 is a great HSF, much better than the Volcano Junk.

I also use an PAL8045....

My temps = 44 Idle, 48 Full Load

AXP1600+ 1.4ghz @ 1.9ghz
Vcore - 1.9
VDimm - 2.8

Hehe, I kinda had a feeling the bolt-on method was probably a bit more secure than the plastic clips.

I Let Prime95 fun for about the last 12 hours while I was sleepin, I'm maxing out at 55C, which I dont think is too bad, cause thats what my IDLE temp was with the volcano I"M A BELIEVER!
