Who says MMA is safer than boxing? Those black outs are brutal.

Holy shit!

Good thing he was out for that. It would probably hurt like hell.

That second link needs a warning so that people can mute it. That'll blow someone's speakers out.
Done. That was horrible sound quality - DrPizza

I wouldn't mind that sport being more strongly regulated for safety.

The public sadly has an unlimited appetite and would bring back the Roman spectacle of men being eaten by lions if they could.

This sport is just trying to inch closer to that and isn't necessary if people are getting injured badly, which seems hard to question.

supposedly MMA is safer than boxing. yes the knockouts are more brutal, but the fight is stopped after the KO. in boxing, you can get back up and keep fighting, suffering more concussion damage than if you had stayed down.

I'd have to disagree with part of that. Most knock downs aren't as totally-immobilizing as those as and there can be as many as 8 additional shots to the head laid before the ref is convinced and dives in and gets the pounding stopped.

In the long run I think mma is safer, because their is ultimately less pounding on the head. From a numbers game perspective, much is done on the ground, tied up with wrestling and submission moves. But on an individual basis, the potential for a more violent impactful brain-injuring defeat in mma is worse.

In my limited knowledge, I don't know of any mma fighters that have died after a fight like there have been in boxing, but if there hasn't been any to date then it's only a matter of time before we see one in the ufc.

Henderson - Bisping was a brutal knockout a few years ago as well.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uh9l58GUZNc

I jokingly mentioned after seeing it that Henderson should have been charged with attempted murder with that punch. These guys know what they're getting into. Research shows that any sort of knockout is a low level traumatic brain injury and is being linked to all sorts of neurologic conditions later in life. These guys know this stuff has long-term consequences, but most of them don't care.

There have been 3, count them 3, total deaths in MMA.

Boxing has averaged 9 per year in its history.

Come back to me once they regulate boxing more.

I'm wondering if that's a saturation factor. Expect more in mma as the sport grows.

Personally I think it needs deregulated.. If two people want to fight to the death shit let them.. Regulations should only make sure neither are being forced/persuaded.

And the parting shot could have ended much worse than it did as well.
I don't blame Henderson so much for taking that shot, but I have seen several times where the fighter looks at the ref and basically says "you better call this one or I'm really going to hurt him" when the other guy is obviously KO'd and the ref is just in a bad position to stop it immediately (like that fight).

Pussification of America.

It's already happening (and continues) to NFL Football, what is next?

Sorry, the only way to kill yourself (even voluntarily) is a slow painful death via fast food.

The Hall KO doesn't really look that bad other than the way Cella froze up on ground. I've seen plenty of head kick KO's that looked worse.

Regarding the OP's other link, you see a lot of brutal KO's at lower level shows. A few years ago I was traveling in Minnesota and heard about an MMA show at a local Indian casino. I decided to go and paid all of $20 for a cage-side seat. 6 of the 7 fights on the card ended in first round KO's. The guys just stood in the pocket and through at each other, it was ridiculous.

there has been i believe zero deaths due to MMA. i think what you are confused about is unsanctioned fights. unsanctioned fights, yes there has been at least 1 death in MMA.
