this si the exact same scenario as that poor guy in the hallway. If the cops ever come to my house I am calling 911. I am telling them that I will unlock my door and lay on the ground with my arms out but that I will not obey commands by police who will shoot me if I make 1 wrong move.

Not obeying commands is the thing that seems to lead to the use of deadly force.

I don't understand how policing gotten to be this awful. Literal amateurs could handle this situation better than this was handled.

There are instances where the police have a legitimate need to pull the trigger in these situations and there have been times when a cop has shot/killed someone when they shouldn't have. Every situation is different based on the office, the suspect, the surroundings, etc...

Everyone that says the cops are wrong every time this happens are just as idiotic as those who claim they are all justified shootings...

These cops have a split second to make the right decision and their life and the lives of other officers are on the line....

They really don't. They have all of the time in the world to not shoot an unarmed person. The fact that Americans appear to accept the unacceptable is the main problem here.

Certainly many more fatal police encounters involve a person other than the cop dying. I feel certain that many of these deaths on each side are preventable. I also feel certain that many are not. I would like an environment where we focused on understanding what are the factors that lead to deaths other than bad cop or bad person. The polarization makes it very difficult to make progress.

all the "arm-chair" quarter backing isn't going to help anyone.

everyone should be angry about "swatting" and how this has created the perfect storm of grief. Far too many people think swatting is funny. It's not. Those that instigate swatting should be sentenced to life with the possibility of parole.

I grieve for the family and the police officers who must deal with the consequences of this incident.

I really don't think police care that much. These cops are just stupid and too scared to do anything right. They are just itching for a reason to pull the trigger. Not looking for a reason to calm things down. Shoot first. Ask questions later. Who cares about the innocent.

The douchebag is a "serial swatter"

"Tyler Raj Barriss, 25, known online as “SWAuTistic,” has been previously arrested for making hoax calls to police, including two bomb threats in 2015. More recently, he may have been responsible for a bomb threat that disrupted the FCC’s vote to repeal net neutrality rules."

Sadly under existing law there might not be a whole lot that they can charge him with, he may very well get off with a misdemeanor charge. Since they haven't released the charges, at least not that I have found, they may be digging deep into the books to find something else to charge him with. This is one circumstance where I am all for them charging this asshole with everything under the sun. I wonder, if they can charge him with a felony can they also charge him with felony murder?

the swatter and the cops both suck. The swatter reported his home was 1 story but the average iq cops couldnt figure out they were looking at a 2 story house.

Police in North America need to adopt a "return fire only" rule. It's the rule our military follows overseas; how can domestic police forces not be held to the same standard?

You already know the high score-ers on the entrance exam, those most likely to think for themselves, are not recruted by Police Departments. The ability to know the laws and regulations, understand them and apply them are just not a requirement. Obey orders, not question procedure and cover for fellow officers, is.

You think the military is held to that standard? Better look up the number of civilian deaths. The collateral damage specs.

The law is rather clear his action was a felony, so I don't see why on earth you think he would get a misdemeanor charge.

Kansas law makes some false calls to police a felony that can be punished up to 13 months in prison for a first-time offender.

Authorities are investigating whether the shooting of a 28-year-old Wichita man by a police officer Thursday stemmed from someone making up a false report to get a SWAT team to descend upon a home. The practice is known as "swatting."

In Kansas, it is a misdemeanor to make a false call for emergency, fire or police services. It's a felony to use an electronic device or software to conceal the caller's identity.

It's a more severe felony if the call falsely claims to be about violent crime or an immediate danger to a person.

The main question would be if he could be looking at a felony murder charge or some other additional charge under the circumstances given his actions were criminal in the first place.
