Have Desktop and notebook. Desktop is hooked up basically 99.9% of the time but there's that .1% I need to plug inthe notebook. I have cable modem directly into the computer, no router. (Comodo firewall)

I used to just unhook the cable from the desktop and plug it into the laptop and it would work perfectly!

Now the notebook never works so I guess the cable co. mac filtered to the NIC in the desktop. It's not like I'm setting up a home network - just 1 computer at a time. It was fine for like 11 months this way.

And I see that the modem has been set to 1.1

Oh well, now I have to get a router and MAC clone and actually set up 2 computers on the network.

If I'm wrong, please tell me! All suggestions welcomed.

Actually with the router all you need to do is register the router's WAC MAC with your ISP. And then plug the laptop and desktop into the router.

With that setup you won't encouter these problems.

I would suggest you just get a router. This is what they are made to do.

For a free solution you could manually set the MAC address of the desktop and laptop to be the same. Note that the network cards must support this.

If you are running XP you could stick an extra NIC in the PC and give the laptop internet access via internet connection sharing.

A router is a good idea anyway for the NAT capability. Essentially you can hide your desktop and laptop behind the router so they are *not* directly accessible from the internet (and you can optionally open specific ports if you want them accessible). The router can also clone the desktop MAC address so you don't have to bother with the cable company.

i have had good luck with shutting down the modem for like a minute, then starting it up an dplugging in the device you want hooked up.

My first suggestion would be as others have said...ROUTER. Beyond that it was also suggested to go ICS in XP which is a good suggestion as well if a router is out of the question. If you wish to do neither of these then leaving your modem unplugged would usually work. Some modems require longer to "forget" your MAC address than others.
