mainly Bulgarians and Romanians here according to police, it's a real pest. I live in a city of 350k people and the cop told me that they can barely keep up.

The locksmith that came to fix my door said just the same, he has a lot of work...

there really isn't much the cops can do about it other than harassing every eastern european until they catch someone. The gangs just drive over the border, go on a crime spree and drive back home long before the cops are even allerted.

Having a tag before getting an alarm system? Brilliant!

when the neighbor's house got robbed a month ago, cops told us a lot of these guys now carry around police scanners and generally don't give a shit about alarms anymore - they know exactly when the call goes in to the police and exactly how long they have in the house to look for things.

As for why they would steal the watch and nothing else - hell of a lot easier to hide a watch than a laptop etc. as you walk out of a building you just robbed.

Have to agree with the guy that posted the pic of the dog - probably the best deterrent is a large dog barking at you from the other side of the door.

that's also what the cop told me. He said that from braking open the door until they get away is only 4-5 minutes at most. They do it around 4-5 PM because traffic makes it difficult for cops to get to the place quickly even if they know that a brake in is going on

I was gonna post this, SOOO many of my neighboors have had eastern europeans break into their houses, they've always avoided my house because of my german shepherd.

The organized breaking in is also happening a lot in the Netherlands as well.

This happened to a friend of mine :
His apartment and the apartment of his neighbors share a common stairs and are grouped as 1 house.
All 3 apartments where complete stripped from electrical appliances such as computers, televisions, radio's, furniture, microwave and similar material as the OP describes. Important detail is that a truck was parked that day in front of the house that seemed like a truck from a moving company, it was rumored that the burglars where even wearing overalls with a company logo.

We suspected that the apartments had been scoped out prior to the event as to see when the working people would leave. Then the burglars would enter but because they looked like they were a moving company, people passing by did not expected anything wrong because they did not seem suspicious.

Further more, we pay with a magnet strip before and now with chip and a lot of automated paying systems have been hacked.
Letters with paying notifications to banks are being intercepted and bank account numbers are modified.
All eastern European criminal gangs.

True. All because of those open borders.

Hope you insured the watch! I know with my personal valuable property insurance, I break even with my premiums if I lose my watch or my fiancee loses her engagement ring a single time in the next 92 years. Considering that is bound to happen, the insurance is a no brainer...

freegeeks, I am sorry for your loss. I know it won't make you feel any better but this is the reality of the world we live in. It's a slim chance the cops will recover it but nonetheless I am rooting for you.

These guys are bringing the heat on themselves. Unfortunately until law enforcement decides to step into those areas there's not too much to be done.

My dog does a pretty good job of scaring unwanted people away:

Get one of those

Sorry you got broken into. I hope they find them.

Sorry to hear you had a break in, but look on the bright side, your level of taste just dramatically improved.

Aw damn...sorry to hear that. I have a Tag Carrera Twin Time and would be devastated if it was stolen. Can't believe they didn't take any other hardware...!

Actually, with all the tracking abilities built into cell phones, computers, etc. I'm kind of not surprised they didn't take those things.

you can kiss your watch good buy b/c is like impossible trying to find the thief and even if you do find the guy, he'll probably sold for dirt cheap at a pond shop by now.

my best advice is go to the pond shop and hopefully you might find your watch there but they won't tell you who brought it in even they know who it was b/c of confidentiality.

Pawn shop, friend, not pond shop.

Do they monitor the places they're going to break into first to make sure the resident works a regular schedule? Do they break into a whole row of homes at once? Do they ever meet resistance? I know that guns aren't uncommon in Belgium, legally owned and otherwise. Are home invaders ever shot by the residents? It seems like if they're breaking into homes faster than the police can take reports, something's got to give.

Sucks that is the biggest piss off ever. Just the thought that they took something you actually worked for, and got it for free.

Got my car broken into twice in my drive way. Garage, once. They only thing they took was the garage door opener to open the garage, I got lucky. Kinda my fault given I forgot to lock the door though.

I gave up and got a security system. It's a matter of time till they break into the house. I secured the garage so they can't open the door at all, not even manually, so they'd probably get pissed and just break the window and get into the house. I have security stickers on the doors and a sign on my lawn now, hopefully they'll get the message and not bother to try.

I have replacement insurance on everything. Added riders for my guns, computers and wife's camera gear.
If my 6 year old 50" plasma TV that I paid $3500 for gets stolen, I get a new 50" plasma TV. Not the $200 it's worth.

It IS really worth it on some things like this. My father had a cell phone and camcorder stolen from him when he was in China a few years back. Had replacement insurance on them. Came back and got a better camcorder as a replacement I think he also replace the cell with something similar.
