A quick comparison reveals that Wayne and Bridges sport their patches on opposite eyes. The Duke covered his left eye as a nod to his longtime collaborator John Ford, who lost vision in that eye when he removed bandages too soon after a cataract operation. No word on why Bridges decided to cover the other side.

The original movie was based on a book. Technically speaking, they are not remaking the original movie. They are going back to the book and doing another adaptation.

John Wayne's True Grit was a great movie however, it wasn't true to the original book. As I understand it, this new version will stay much closer to the book.

According to Variety, the Coen Bros aren't aiming for a traditional remake -- they want to return to the original Charles Portis novel, and make a more faithful adaptation. Their version will be told from Mattie's point of view, as the original novel is, and keep Cogburn as a side player. The Coens will undoubtedly amp up the Biblical tone and include the darker elements ... like what really happens to her after the snakebite.

In any event, I have always loved westerns and will definitely see this new version when it comes out.

Not even Stagecoach was safe from the gratuitous remake; there was actually a version (1986) with Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings. Avoid it like the Plague.
The 1966 Alex Cord/Bing Crosby/Ann Margaret/Van Heflin version is not much better.

My apologies in advance for your disappointment. It is a truly dreadful film; besides the questionable casting, IIRC, it was made-for-TV, with the concomitant artificial (and annoying) script breaks for advertisements.
