Thin HSF Unit

I'm having issues keeping a 1.1GHz Tbird cool, but haven't been able to really replace the stock HSF. The problem is that the power supply sits right over the cpu, with about 3" between the cpu (not the top of the current HSF) and the bottom of the power supply. I have an exhaust fan at the top of the case right over the CPU.

The issue is: I'm worried that getting a large sink will result in little air flow because of the PSU blocking. Is there a good, thin HSF that would be able to move more heat than the stock?

Go with an svc goldengate 40. I think that was the number. Find it at www.heatsinkstore.com. I worked on a case similar to yours, it was an inwin s500 I think where I ran into the same problem. The goldengate is all copper, rather thin, and came with a 70x70x20mm fan. Cooled great and left a lot of room between the PS and the fan.

Believe me, you`re on a hiding to nothing with that case, get an Athlon friendly one which has the CPU in the clear and an exhaust fan at the rear close by.. I spent ages with a slot-1 case trying to cool the damn thing, gave up in the end and bought a Lian Li PC60 and it lowered temps by 6 degrees with a 4300RPM fan than they were before with a 7000RPM Delta !

Cases should never be made with a power supply sitting like that. But I guess for one who never opens the case it's fine.

If you do keep it one I suggest which is very low profile and that cools well is the Dr Thermal TI-V77L. The V77L is quiet but if you don't mind the noise then maybe a V77N version. It uses a more powerful but noisy fan. But you'll probably still have to remove the power supply to uninstall the current one and replace it. At least you should so you have more room.

They were made like that back in the Slot-1 days because the quality ones had vents under the powersupply and they either had 2-fans (similar to an Enermax) or had just vents underneath to allow airflow from the HS out of the case, a good arrangement back then, but Klamath / Deschutes heatsinks were massive and were fitted with slow fans (the way things SHOULD be - rely on most of the cooling work being done by non-moving parts!), your average Athlon-approved PSU has no vents and in a good case doesn`t need them. in my instance, the FOP38/Delta was half under the powersupply very close and the fan ran at 7200/7300 RPM due to the restriction imposed - NOT athlon friendly and noisier than a Delta running free.. I have a Socket-370 board in that case now with a very large but flat Socket-A coolermaster on but CuMines / Tualatins run far cooler than Athlons / P4s in any case..

There`s ATX and there`s ATHLON friendly ATX.. I`ve seen problems even with old large server ATX cases because the exhaust fans were no where near the CPU area and just sucked air through the 5.25" drive bays and the CPU got hot there too ..
