Things are looking better for AMD

So with SB not really building on intel's performance lead, this gives AMD a huge opportunity to come in and claim the performance crown. Not only that, but intel just handed them a huge chunk of the low-end market by eliminating overclocking on the i3.

I'm thinking that an 8-core Bulldozer will crush anything intel makes.:thumbsup:

Did you by chance miss the benchmarks? 2500K puts a beating on a 1090T for the same money

Well remember that the parts introduced so far are all low-end/mainstream, the 2600K for example is priced at $317. These products aren't really meant to build on Intel's performance lead. The 6C/12T and 8C/16T chips coming in Q3 2011, however, are. And they're probably going to be beasts.

For those who want to max out performance in the low-end segment - AMD will be better solution since i3's are crippled o/c wise. Unless AMD lock their low-end processors. Then AMD and Intel both will shoot them selves in the leg. That would be kinda funny.

Not only that, but intel just handed them a huge chunk of the low-end market by eliminating overclocking on the i3.

Agreed with this one. On everything else the OP wrote - not a chance.

If AMD manages to "bulldoze" Intel I'm sure they'll be priced accordingly - high.

Just like Intel does now, both companies do it...

To the OP, try to not get too over-excited, I'm hoping for at least Nehalem from Bulldozer, and Sandy is a step-up from that.

However, I'm hoping for some major cuts on CPU prices because of Sandy, which is good for all of us!

that only happened in your mind. Come back in a few months with evidence of AMD picking up very large increases in cpu market share and I'll congratulate you. Till then, you are now Anandtech's resident AMD pipe dreamer

All Intel is doing by enforcing clock locks for these lower end chips is sending potential customers AMD's way.

It happened in Anand's mind as well. :whiste:

I'm thinking that AMD's low-end marketshare will increase.

It would be nice if it's as fast as Nehalem clock-for-clock, which would make the 8-core variant the fastest chip on the market.

But people like me aren't going to wait 6 months for BD when a 2500K with some overclocking smokes anything else out there for $220~ bucks.

I hope AMD puts out some quality chips, but I just can't wait anymore and the prices for the SB chips are pretty good.

I don't have endless vision, I'm just a realist. Yeah, I would like AMD to come up with something very competitive and of course it would totally suck to have Intel completely dominate so that AMD went under. But hoping for those things doesn't change anything. The reason this pipe dreamer label will stick to you is because you are seeing things that aren't there. Anand says that the lack of overclocking on the low end Sandy Bridge could make AMD cpus more appealing and I agree. But that doesn't guarantee that AMD will pick up this huge chunk of low end market share like you are dreaming.

I'm sorry, but it is pretty obvious you did not read any reviews of SB. What exactly was the point of this thread?

I could like to a number of reviews that state SB performance was exceptional, and power usage was even better. At this point, I doubt you would take the time to read them anyway, so I will let you google them on your own, if you so choose.

*hint* 4-core SB completely owns any benchmarks that 6-core AMD chips used to have, and the 2500k (~$200) is a better CPU than ANYTHING AMD has. The i3-2100 (dual-core) is also better than most X4 processors as well.

If anything, SB really met the expectations that it had (lofty as they were). Get the K models though, you don't want to miss out on the crazy OCs on these...

SB does not really add anything to the high-end. Sure, its 4-core variant is as fast as the previous extreme edition 6 core chip, and it runs cooler. It's not faster, though. This is why I think AMD has an opportunity to at least catch up with intel performance-wise.

I'm just saying that SB is going to open things up for AMD at the low end, and they have a chance to take back the performance crown with an 8-core Bulldozer. One would think that with all this time and research, Bulldozer will be at least 25% faster than the current Phenom II's clock-for-clock.

Well my guess would be that Bulldozer will have an advantage in heavily multithreaded apps and that SB will smoke 'em in light threaded ones (and the majority of apps out there are just that).

So every product will find it's buyer.

SB doesn't open anything up for AMD at the low end because OEMs don't give a rat's ass about overclocking. a handful of overclockers do not make a dent in the market.

BD needs to be a big performance increase for AMD to justify charging north of $200 for any of it. there's the real problem for AMD with SB. the market just compressed. yesterday you had to spend $1000, now you can spend $300.

Bulldozer will have to compete against the high end sandy bridge when they are released at the end of the year. I don't see AMD taking the performance crown from Intel after they are released. But, maybe they do and then you will have to pay $999 for a black edition.

Bulldozer will also have to be more than 25% faster than current Phenom II products to retake the performance crown. My Q9450 stands up to the 1100T (1100T win in highly threaded apps of course) and the new 2600K destroys my Q9450 across the board.

I have an issue with writing before i read

nothing is wrong with what you wrote.

I think the Original poster needs to reread what he posted.

the current version is SB is a Midrange chip not Highend.

based on what i've seen the highend chip on 2011 should be even faster. I think AMD is in for a world of hurt if bulldozer doesn't bring a huge performance improvement over Phenom II.

it may end up being bulldozer and this is a big maybe will equal the 6 core performance of SB-E but then the 8 core version of SB-E will destroy it.

My gut is telling me BD maybe only equal the performance of a 6 core Westmere chip.

We're being gouged at the top-end by Intel too, like I've already said today both companies do it.

Top-end here in the UK is £804.08 ($1246.32) and it's all because of no competition at that level.

We should all be hoping for more competition, should be hoping Bulldozer catches up, and that Sandy/Ivy trade blows with Bulldozer.

All i was saying is don't think AMD is your friend. If they take the performance crown they will charge through the teeth for their top product. Like you said if one is at the top they charge what they want.
