The metric system I can accept as powers of ten are easy to compute/convert. I cannot, however, accept the use of the spelling colour. This cannot stand!

metric system - too much damn work to convert into Gallons.
#1 reason to hate the US - Americans still use the british system

Seriously, why does that system still exist? Going to Home Depot shouldn't turn into a grade 7 math problem. This wood I'm looking at is 5/4" (sic) thick and I want to put a 3/16 washer on each side of it. What is the minimum bolt length to do this? Hmm well first I add my washers to get 6/16 then I put the wood on a common denominator to get... uuhhhh... I gues 20/16, then add them so I have 26/16 which would be.... 1 and 10/16 inch? Of course nothing would be listed as 10/16 so I now need to reduce that to uhh.... 5/8? So the minimum bolt is 1 and 5/8 inches plus the size of the nut which is probably some other fucked up fraction and I need to bring a damn calculator just to built a fucking porch. Jesus christ you guys wtf.

Metric:
1.23 + 2.57 = 3.80
finished. no fractions. no math. no bringing a damn calculator into a hardware store.

I'll grant you Anne Murray. Oh and the Grey Cup is probably the nicest looking trophy in pro sports.

This part was funny though.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_of_1812

The British scored an important early success when their detachment at St. Joseph Island, on Lake Huron, learned of the declaration of war before the nearby American garrison at the important trading post at Mackinac Island in Michigan. A scratch force landed on the island on July 17, 1812 and mounted a gun overlooking Fort Mackinac. After the British fired one shot from their gun, the Americans, taken by surprise, surrendered. This early victory encouraged the natives, and large numbers moved to help the British at Amherstburg.

When you read about the War of 1812 in American history books in high schools its more like "There was a war in 1812 with the British...moving on!"

wait, no mention of the torching?

It has of course been years since I was taking US history in high school/middleschool but the white house being burned down is kind of one those historical facts you tend to remember if you hear it. And I wasn't aware of it until Western Civ in college, where they actually present things from a somewhat non-American perspective. I guess it was to embarrassing a fact to print in our particular high school text.

The most LOLtastic American war was probably the Spanish-American...isn't that the one where an old shitty boat blew up (most likely because it was shitty) and we basically blamed an industrial accident on made up Spanish terrorists as an excuse to invade then hapless Spain? It's hilarious events like this that make George Bush blaming 9/11 on Saddam Hussein seem slightly less ridiculous...from a historical perspective.

Whitewashing annoys me, especially in history class.

IIRC, I think my text book blamed the spanish-american war on "yellow journalism". It could probably be renamed Glen Beck-ism.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellow_journalism#Spanish-American_War
But Hearst became a war hawk after a rebellion broke out in Cuba in 1895. Stories of Cuban virtue and Spanish brutality soon dominated his front page. While the accounts were of dubious accuracy, the newspaper readers of the 19th century did not expect, or necessarily want, his stories to be pure nonfiction. Historian Michael Robertson has said that "Newspaper reporters and readers of the 1890s were much less concerned with distinguishing among fact-based reporting, opinion and literature."[16]

Pulitzer, though lacking Hearst's resources, kept the story on his front page. The yellow press covered the revolution extensively and often inaccurately, but conditions on Cuba were horrific enough.

It's also a common belief today that the US entered WW1 due to yellow journalism. When the Lusitania was sunk by Germans, that was painted as something on the scale of 9/11. Hundreds of innocent civilians brutally killed by evil communazi Germans from hell! In reality, the Germans put advertisements in American newspapers explicitly stating not to travel to Europe because their ship might be sunk. There was a total blockade going on at that time that most Americans knew about. It was also a fact that the boat was carrying munitions from USA to Britain, which makes it a fair military target. Yellow journalism and conveniently hiding those facts got people all riled up to support going to war.

You also learn that Christopher Columbus was some great explorer, who was the first to discover 'The new world'. That the Indians were savages. That America wins every war that has ever had any importance. And that World War I had a point.

Come on, really? WWI was a silly, silly war.

Edit: Nice call on WWI ShawnD1
