The southern border doesn't need any more protection. Trump probably will face criminal charges but it's been so long now that it's essentially meaningless to anyone but him. There are hundreds of Trump wannabes already at the state and federal levels because they have seen there are no consequences for it.

I used to believe that. But then people from Libya, sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia started turning up at the southern border (and even some at the northern border).

With so many people displaced or stateless over the past 2 decades (Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, ISIS, Boko Haram, Rohingya, Uighur etc.) it’s not surprising that we’ll see asylum seekers from outside the Americas. But what’s changing is the criminal element recruiting migrants for cash and “caravaning” them through in mass numbers. It’s a global business now—they’re using the same shipping routes that once moved drugs to move people.

So yes, we do need increased patrols and a “smart border”—if not just to keep people out, but also to help keep migrants alive. I do think it makes more sense to put money on stabilizing governments in Central America and building transitory facilities in these countries rather than building a shitty fence though.

I wouldn't list this (above) in the THINGS I KNEW WOULD NEVER HAPPEN category.
McCarthy is walking on shaky ground, and Trump is in for a difficult time in his third quest for president. I could see house republicans to consider Trump as their only savior after McCarthy bites the dust. And Trump 100% on board for the idea of speaker after his quest for president fizzles as republican challengers emerge. Trump as speaker would give Trump all the attention Trump needs, and the logical course of events in maintaining this clown car.
