Yes, because you can always choose any OS you want and have no problems with applications being available for it. Many people are stuck with Windows for the time being. That's just the way it is.

If microsoft marketed their own PC they'd have an unfair advantage over other PC makers that they would not be able to compete with. On top of that, they would be extending their reach into another level, further getting leverage to steer the PC market wherever they wanted.

Dell makes money off of it's BRAND name and enterprise hardware + support contracts. They made billions my developing a sustainable catalog order technology company, and later online order technology company. Before companies like Dell, you had to buy computers from RadioShack or Steve Job's garage.

Asking what Dell does is like asking what Diesel does. We still pay $200 for a pair of Diesel jeans when they're made with the same material as Wrangler jeans from KMart.


Microsoft obviously can't steal 85% of the pc marketshare by limiting it's OS to certain hardware. Had this been their strategy from day 1, maybe it would have worked. But remember, Microsoft started out making software for other OS's. Bill Gates wrote floating point arithmetic for macs. They weren't about the OS until much later in the game.
