Carrying this along. How to accept failure and carry on to to do the best you can instead of giving up or getting special care.

If CO2 isn't going to cause global warming, then how the fuck can you explain a planet like Jupiter that had just that, out of control global warming caused by green house gasses?

Where do you get your information? Jupiter is a gas giant and its atmosphere is 90% hydrogen, 9% helium plus traces of methane and ammonia. Only one of those gasses is a green house gas, but I'll leave you to figure out which one. Jupiter though radiates more heat than it gets from the sun, but that has nothing to do with its atmosphere, and it's still very fucking cold nonetheless.

Edit: I'd add basic economics and money management.

How to eat pussy properly. And related class: How to use a camera.

I love all these 18 year old sluts posting their kinky lives online, but most of the camera work is atrocious.

math
math
more math

A high school diploma should require at least twice as many math classes as it currently does. Cut out most of the bullshit classes nobody cares about and replace it with math. Why? Because math is your entire world. If you put $1000 on a credit card that charges 20% yearly interest, compounded monthly, how much interest will you accumulate over 3 years if your monthly payments were $10? I remember doing questions that were worded just like this in grade 11, but it was only in the pre-university level math. The retard math required for a diploma did not cover such incredibly important concepts like compounding interest (exponents) and logarithms.

Related to the above problem, we learned in introductory calculus what the maximum effective interest was if the compounding periods were shortened. Monthly interest compounds in larger amounts than yearly interest, correct? Biweekly compounds even faster. What happens if the compound periods were shortened to 0 time, and there were an infinite number of compound periods? It would be written as something like (1 + (1/9999999))^9999999. Go grab a calculator and type this in. My calculator says the answer is 2.71828. Clear that answer and hit the e button on the calculator. What does it equal?
Grasping this concept made chemistry and biology so much easier. Just by looking at the math equation written on the board, we get a vague idea of what the equation is trying to say. Even if we have no idea what is going on in chemistry class, understanding what the formula means lets us figure it out on our own.

Having taken a shit load of math classes for the degree I had before going into engineering, I have a leg up when learning engineering. The guy teaching us how about rectifiers has a thick accent and his sentences often don't make a lot of sense, but I can follow what he's doing by reading his crazy math equations on the board. In a class where literally half the students are failing, my average is around 90% so far because I can read math better than anyone else in the class.

Combinations and permutation were in grade 12 pre-university math. Almost 100% of the high school students accepted into university can tell you the exact odds of winning the local 6-49 lottery where you pick 6 different numbers between 1 and 49. This level of math is not required for a high school diploma, and as a result, people who only did the minimum amount of math required for a diploma have absolutely no idea what the odds are unless they go out of their way to look it up. I really think this needs to change.

Agreed.

Plus teach people how to use their goddamn turn signals.

edit: I guess that falls under respect and etiquette and not being a dumbass.

logic and basic physics

Logic is a great BS detector

Basic physics helps people discern when what they might think is happening or what they wish to be happening is flat out impossible. Another great BS detector.

law and politics should be covered by social studies... at least they were back when I was in school.

teaching something like mechanics would require a huge $$ investment from an already broke government without much benefit in return.

I get through life pretty well without ever having taken calc or physics.

AFAIK, high schools generally require 3 years of math... you're suggesting 6?

personally, I've always felt like English programs should have significantly less emphasis on literature and focus on writing instead (and not just basics like grammar, but rhetoric, style, etc)

Basic how to 'fix' things skills in schools like how to disassemble anything in a plastic enclosure without destroying it. How to RTFM because apparently this is beyond most people. How to interact with people, how to argue with people, how to DE-escalate situations, how to talk to your employer, etc. It's almost like schools teach you everything you don't need to know and nothing you do need to know.

yup

Cross-multiplication.

I was taught this in like, 6th or 7th grade. This is an incredibly useful skill, and whenever I mention it I get blank stares. When I demonstrate I sometimes get people recognizing it by a different name, but usually not.

Sorry that fails the useful skill test, and is something anyone that has had any math knows... Any stares are at how dumb it would look for one to think it was worth mentioning to anyone outside of maybe middle school.

i agree with this. They used to teach Home Ec (cooking) in school but don't anymore. We took it for 1/2 a year and the other 1/2 of the year it was Sex Ed when i was in 7th or 8th grade. for our finial we had to prepare and cook an entire meal with appetizer and Dessert for our family and they had a bunch of shit they graded us on that we handed back in to get our grade.

How about English? And geography? Those are two things many young people in this country know absolutely nothing about.

Perhaps but Fleabag then followed it up with another post that claimed "Jupiter that had ...out of control global warming caused by green house gasses" so he is back to form. Spouting inaccurate or flat out incorrect information. Balance, harmony and order have been restored.

Edit: I'd add an intro to physics class to the list. If taught properly can be very useful and thought provoking.

How about English? And geography? Those are two things many young people in this country know absolutely nothing about.

The thing with English is that the teaching of it varies so much from school to school / State to state. I can tell you that i never saw a sentence diagram when i was in school, I'm almost 100% positive the first time i ever say one was on wikipedia and it was linked from ATOT. I'm also near 100% positive I learned what verbs and nouns were from madlibs and not school. It really needs to be standardized across the country.

Geography we learned a bunch of randomly
