Hard to believe I live 45 minutes away from Boston and haven't been to most of these things.

Posted this in the other Boston thread, so here's a cross post to make sure you get the info, too:

I live in the North End. Right by the Old North Church. PM me if you want my address, but I'm literally 100 feet from the church.

I would suggest these places:

* Come by for a beer on my back patio, where you can see the church down an alley. (as long as you aren't allergic to cats)
* Go to Bova's bakery. Get their fresh baked Cinnamon bread if you can (they only make it twice a week). If not, get a canoli.
* Avoid Mike's, Modern (unless you like canolies, I still think the canolies at bova's are better, but modern makes them in front of you).
* Go to Ernesto's pizza and try a slice. If you don't go there, go to Pushcart. Avoid Regina's altogether.
* Go to the Paul Revere House near North Square. If you go with a North End resident, I *think* you get in free (not sure).
* Try brunch at North Street Grille (Saturday, Sunday). If you are here during the week, get breakfast at Theo's Cozy Corner on Salem Street by the Old North Church (GREAT breakfast, so-so lunch, closed for dinner).
* If you want super good Italian, and aren't on a diet, go to Giacamos on Hanover. If you go during the late week or weekend, PM me for my landlord's name (she works there). Order the calamari. They also have a special lately which is great - homemade lobster fusili. Their pumpkin tortellini is to die for (both in terms of taste, and heart attack risk).
* If you want something a bit more healthy, Al Dente on Salem is good. So is some place beginning with an E near pushcart (I forget the name off the top of my head, but it's right next to a dry cleaners).
* If you want a haircut while you're here, swing by Rocko's barber shop on Salem. I go there - very old fashioned, really cool.
* For a drink, go to the Sail Loft. It's right on the water along causeway. Locally, it's known as the "Tail Loft". =)

I have many more suggestions, but I don't want to overwhelm. I absolutely love the North End though and plan on living here for a very long time.

If you want suggestions for the rest of Boston, do let me know - I have great experience there, too.

Agreed all around. Fenway is a must visit for any baseball fan.

Holy crap, didn't know this. I have been to Boston 3 times in the last year and I definitely would have bought you a beer. I'm hoping to make it there again soon, it's definitely in my top 2-3 favorites cities (Austin, Seattle, Boston).

That being said, all you Boston people fail.

HOW HAS NO ONE SAID HARPOON BREWERY. FREE. BEER. (on weekdays, weekends it's like $5 and you get the equivalent of 3 beers).

I could seriously gush on about Boston for hours. Honestly, 2 days I just walked around and that was awesome. North End, on the park above the big dig (Roosevelt?), Holocaust Memorial. What a beautiful city, especially this time of year.

Damn I need to plan another trip to Boston.

Looking forward to your visit! Swing by

As for Harpoon, I have been there a few times. The first time was major FAIL - they had a broken tank so the tour was busted. I usually don't recommend it because it's so far out of the way and on the yucky Silver Line, but it is a good choice. For beer, I'd recommend Sunset. Touristy, but tradition. Deep Ellum is great. So is Atwoods in East Cambridge.

Yes, I <3 Boston too. My other favorite city is Denver/Boulder and Portland, OR

For those that like beer, sushi, and a good donut, Boston has all you need in one spot on Cambridge st (across from the Old West Church):

Hard to see, but yes, that is a combined dunkin donuts/sushi bar.

Are you talking about the place near the Chinese place and up the road from Ma Soba? It's got a Dunkin Donuts, Sushi bar, and some sandwich place in one building? If so, the sushi bar was AWESOME, but changed about 3 weeks ago, and now it sucks - they do some fried lunch buffet now, and the sushi has gone downhill.

I recommend Ma Soba a *LOT* - right up the road. For people who like Tamago specifically, go to Toki in Allston for the best home-made Tamago around.

Ever been there for Harpoon's annual Beer Festival? Jean and I went one year and it was a blast though it probably would be more fun for people your age (a lot of College age people, especially women) A must for any guy living in Bostonia under 30.

I had free tickets to the one last year but couldn't make it. I'll try again this year.

I really am bitter about beer festivals until I can make it to a Fat Tire one

Yeah, that was the place. Too bad they sushi joint changed. It used to be pretty good. On a nice day, I'd walk across the river and grab a bite there for lunch.

Oh I definitely will. I'm hoping to get a job there. We went to Harpoon because I stayed with some family in Auburndale so we had to drive anyway.

Haven't been to Denver or Portland but I adore Seattle and I hear Portland is similar but a little more chill/country which I dig.

Side note: do any apartments/condos have parking? If I moved there I would need a car (sales engineering work).

I visited boston and left after a day because of how dead the night life was. Of course this was a few years ago so things may have changed. If I'm not into museums (saw them all too much) and college flavored bars, what else is there to do? I have a friend that lives in braintree and thought about visiting again.

I don't know about Al Dente being healthy but I will vouch for their pasta. They have a fresh pasta section on their menu that is just awesome. My mom and nonna make fresh pasta on occasion and the quality is comparable. if you love fresh pasta, this place is a must.
