Discovered by the Germans in 1904, they named it San Diego, which of course in German means a whale's vagina.

Haven't been in a long time OP, but the things I'd recommend are as follows, especially this one, Seaport Village, San Diego Zoo, Sea World, and a restaurant called the Fish Market. Also catching a ball game at the new(ish) Padres stadium would be awesome.

San Diego was pretty awesome the last time I was there, but like I said, haven't been there in a while.

It should take you about 5 seconds on the internet to find more things to do there than you'll have time with. This is not like going to Lost Springs, WY.

Food: Bronx Pizza (San Diego's best; hyper informal)
Then find an authentic Mexican taco stand/shack.
Mexican seafood is particularly popular and special there.

Activities: Try homeless surfing.
Wait for ComiCon (local pass time).
Defraud Toyota w/a "stuck" pedal.
Eat contaminated Bumblebee tuna.
Huff SD's signature WD-40.

Enjoy!

Drive north a bit and go scuba diving or snorkeling at La Jolla Cove, one of the nicest spots along the Southern California Coast.

La Jolla is an underwater park with no hunting or fishing allowed. You can't even take shells out of the water. Combined with the deep water trench just offshore feeding nutrient-rich water into the area, the variety of sea life is vast. When the sea lions are visiting it's common to have them swim in close and check you out. Lost of big orange garibaldi (CA's state fish), huge lobster hiding in the rocks, rays, small sharks and tons of various fish to watch.

It's one of my favorite places.

Are there any must dos/must sees in San Diego? Thanks.

Depends on how much money you want to spend.

Free stuff... go to any of the beaches. Walk down OB Pier. Visit Mount Soledad/Helix. Climb down the cliffs (trail) at Blacks Beach.

Food... hole-in-wall Mexican places are usually good. Any 'Bertos (Robertos, Roybertos, Alibertos and endless clones) are... interesting. For Baja inspired fresh Mex try the local chain Rubio's. There's East Buffet (or whatever they're called now) on Miramar Road for an extensive Chinese buffet. Lots of places in the Gaslamp District. Lots of Mexican restaurants in Old Town (specializing in HUGE margaritas).

SD Zoo, Wild Animal Park, Sea World.

Go to the Brigantine for the best fish tacos. It is part of their bar menu and they have a nice selection of beer too.

Are those small sharks just baby sharks that have big momma sharks not to far away?

La Jolla Cove - walking around there, and lots of restaurants too.
Downtown / Gaslamp quarter is awesome. Tons of bars and restaurants.
Seaport Village - downtown on the bay is nice, kinda touristy.
Midway Aircraft Carrier museum - Very cool, down a mile from Seaport Village
Cruise around the bay. all the charters are around down by the Midway.
And of course the Zoo / Sea World / LegoLand.
Old Town is great for some Mexican culture and great mex food.

The Brigantine does have great fish tacos, but IMHO the best are at South Beach Bar and Grill in OB at the end of Newport Ave. They also have a great selection of beers, and represent San Diego's amazing beer market quite well. Also, Hodad's hamburger joint is right there, one of the best burgers around.
That's another thing you could do, go beer tasting!
Stone, Ballast Point, Port Brewing/Lost Abbey, Green Flash, Alesmith, Karl Strauss, etc...

Check these threads.

Harmless, bottom feeding leopard sharks spawn in the area in the summer and fall. They can sometimes be found in shallow water, grow to maybe 5-6 feet and are fun to watch.

I have dived there probably 30-40 times and have never seen a big shark, but all kinds of sharks have been reported there. An unidentified kayaker reported that a great white attacked her kayak a few years ago. I also remember reading that a diver leaving the cove told a lifeguard that he and a buddy spotted a young great white about two years ago.

Anyhoo, it's a great place to dive.

If you like soul food, or just fried chicken. Bonnie Jeans Soul Food Cafe is TOPS. The Honey Pecan glazed fried chicken is TO DIE FOR. If you want the best taco's, Taco El Gordo hands down.
