The Brigantine does have great fish tacos, but IMHO the best are at South Beach Bar and Grill in OB at the end of Newport Ave. They also have a great selection of beers, and represent San Diego's amazing beer market quite well. Also, Hodad's hamburger joint is right there, one of the best burgers around.
That's another thing you could do, go beer tasting!
Stone, Ballast Point, Port Brewing/Lost Abbey, Green Flash, Alesmith, Karl Strauss, etc... [/URL]

I agree South Beach's fish taco's are amazing and the best I've had in the County. Just a reminder to those who've never been is that they don't take cards there so bring cash.

edit: Same goes for Bronx Pizza listed above. I understand not wanting to pay fees and such but dammit all the good places dont take cards.

Definately check out the breweries.

Some of the best IPAs are from the San Diego area. Stone's Brewery/Bistro is quite lush. My favorite was a Friday night at Green Flash when I was there. Ballast Point's is in a weird location, but their Sculpin IPA is world class.

There are a quite a few nice Pubs too. Beer Advocate is your friend.

Green Flash is gone. Another company bought their equipment and location though so there is still beer being made there.

Check out Lost Abbey for a good local beer and Pizza Port makes some tastey brew too. The CFO of Lost Abbey is one of the owners of what used to be Green Flash Brewery.

Edit-It seems that Green Flash might have moved or just closed down the San Marcos location. I see they have a location in Mira Mesa.

Watch how people build an entire city on hill sides as if there's nothing wrong about it. Its a disaster waiting to happen!!!

The Vista Green Flash location did indeed close and Latitude 33 took its spot (the head brewer is from Backstreet Brewery). Green Flash moved to a much larger space in Mira Mesa/Sorrento Valley.

Also Mother Earth makes awesome beers and they're opening a second location in downtown Vista across the street from Urbn Pizza/next to Hennessey's.

Not to thread steal but what is the Asian food scene like there? I see lots of mentions of Mexican (or Mexican inspired) but not much Asian.

The location we were in looked farely new. It was a large space with a ton of capacity from what I could tell. This was back in late January.

Green Flash is available in Alabama, which is kind of shocking. I live in MS and we finally are able to get beer with a ABV up to 10%. Word is Green Flash will be here by 2013.

Drive north a bit and go scuba diving or snorkeling at La Jolla Cove, one of the nicest spots along the Southern California Coast.

La Jolla is an underwater park with no hunting or fishing allowed. You can't even take shells out of the water. Combined with the deep water trench just offshore feeding nutrient-rich water into the area, the variety of sea life is vast. When the sea lions are visiting it's common to have them swim in close and check you out. Lost of big orange garibaldi (CA's state fish), huge lobster hiding in the rocks, rays, small sharks and tons of various fish to watch.

It's one of my favorite places.

i feel sorry for you if you think La Jolla is a good snorkeling spot.

did a snorkel/kayak trip there 2 years ago and the visibility was terrible and only these orange fish. ton of that seaweed looking crap in the water too.

oh, and it was cold as shit even in a full body wetsuit.

by far the worst snorkeling experience i've ever had. my friend (who lives in SD) agreed.

Drive up about 1 1/2 hours to Garden Grove/Westminister/Tustin for some awesome Vietnamese/Korean/Japanese food. lol.

The quality depends greatly on the conditions there. It can be 20-30' vis on a good day, but surf will always stir things up. Much of the time it's horrible.

Also the water temp varies from 55-72. In the summer it can still dip into the low 60s if there's a lot of upwelling in the canyons offsore. At 66 playing in the surf is great, but it's probably still chilly for snorkeling. Below 60 is way too cold, even with a wetsuit. Gives me a headache.

Hodads is also pretty damn good, a bit overrated for all the hype it gets. But nice if you like bacon + burgers. It's also a block from the beach so that's a plus.

Here are a few Asian eats around San Diego that are decent enough that I remembered them. I've starred *** my favorites.

Pho Hoa ***
map
4717 El Cajon Boulevard
San Diego, CA 92115
(619) 283-6431
For pho, which is Vietnamese noodle soup. It's like a hot pot. I used to always get the #1 which is a huge bowl, but they have the same stuff in smaller sizes too. They also have reasonable tasting Thai tea with boba.

Yum Cha Cafe ***
map
6933 Linda Vista Road
San Diego, CA 92111
(858) 268-9988
This is dim sum food, served as a takeout. Place is kind of dingy, but super cheap with stuff starting at $1.39. They have the normal stuff like shumai and various bao, plus more exotic stuff like braised chicken feet.

Emerald Seafood Restaurant
map
3709 Convoy Street
San Diego, CA 92111
(858) 565-6888
This place serves dim sum during lunch. Pricier, but quality is usually top notch. You can get pots of chrysanthemum tea here that is mild yet tasty.

Chin's Restaurant ***
map Convoy
4433 Convoy Street
San Diego, CA 92111
(858) 499-8963
map Miramar
9355 Kearny Mesa Road
San Diego, CA 92126
(858) 536-2300
Somewhat swanky decor, with decent prices and good quality. Heck, my 87 year old grandmother (Chinese) likes this place, so it can't be all bad. I think they may have other locations as well, but these are the ones I know about.

Super Buffet/East Buffet
map
8998 Miramar Road
San Diego, CA 92126
(858) 566-1888
Their name keeps changing, but this place is pretty decent. Pricier than random cheap Chinese buffets but cheaper than the expensive places like Todai. Their offerings are really extensive, with sushi and sashimi, Mongolian BBQ, all the usual stuff you'd find at Chinese buffets including higher end stuff like crab legs, plus sometimes some unusual stuff. I've seen frog legs there before. Quality can vary from time to time, but usually it is acceptable.

Sam Woo BBQ ***
map
7330 Clairemont Mesa Blvd #103
San Diego, CA 92111
(858) 505-9888
This is in the same building as 99 Ranch Market, but is across the walkway from them, in the back corner. There are 3 different places to eat there, and this is my favorite. They have a decent sized drink menu, including my absolute favorite boba milk tea. Let me repeat. This place has my absolute favorite boba milk tea. Don't know about their other offerings, but their boba milk tea is brewed, and is NOT from a powder. It tastes a whole lot better than most places that mix it from a powder. This place is split in two, with one side as a normal sit-down restaurant and the other side as a takeout place. If you just want the drinks, just go up to the register at the takeout side. Their drink menu is on the wall behind the register. Their takeout is pretty cheap. You can get 2 items plus rice or noodles for around $5, and they really pile up the food for you. You can seriously feed 2 people on that. Lots of decent offerings. My current favorite is their chicken curry, which is not spicy at all but is very savory. They also sell roasted ducks, chickens and pigs.

Todai

2828 Camino Del Rio South
San Diego, CA 92108

This is a chain, but is still not super common. It is a premium Asian buffet that specializes in sushi and stuff like crab legs, plus an extensive dessert bar.

The zoo is nice. I was out there for some training so really all I saw was Qualcomm and some microbreweries (which were excellent).
