Use it as a cheese tray? Very thin booster seat for a small person?

What do you want to do on it?

Which model?

iPad 1: Sell it or give it away.
iPad 2: Install vlc and nPlayer on it for MKV video.

iPads are generally better used as consumption devices, as opposed to productivity devices in most cases.

I couldn't give my ipad 1 away so I took it apart.

I'm curious. What type of people did you try to give it to? Were they gadget geeks like us? Or teens who absolutely wanted a mini or something?

I am guessing you can sell them for under $100 on Craigslist reasonably quickly.

BTW, I had been debating whether or not to unload my 1st gen 16 GB Nexus 7 now or later, which also is probably worth less than $100 on Craigslist if I want to sell quickly. Since my wife hogs our iPad 2, I've been wanting to get an iPad Air 2, but that won't be out for months. In the meantime I've been using the Nexus 7 for Netflix occasionally. Otherwise it kinda sucks, albeit not quite as bad as the iPad 1 in terms of speed. I'll probably just keep it for now though. Since those first gen Nexus 7s are not worth so much now, it's not as if I'll lose that much resale value if I sell in the fall.

iPad 1 is basically good enough to be a music/airplay audio streamer jukebox at this point. 256MB of ram was a critical failing.
The 256 MB RAM was the classic Apple early adopter gotcha. It was also one reason I didn't get the iPad 1. I decided to just wait for the iPad 2. We still use the iPad 2.

Meanwhile my buddy bought the iPad 1 and sold it a year later to buy the iPad 2, since the iPad 1 was under-spec'd even back then.

BTW, I use my iPhone 3G only as a baby nursery music jukebox these days. That one is even more crippled at 128 MB RAM.

Yep. I had the iPad 1 and that was a huge limitation when web browsing. If you tried to open up more than two tabs, it would crash. The whole laugh is they released the iPhone 4 just a couple months later with double the memory.

I know Netflix still supports the original iPad, provided you have their old app. I was using mine to watch TV in my workshop.

Yep. I bought the iPhone 4. Its release basically told me that the iPad 2 was guaranteed to get twice the memory of the iPad 1.

I'm surprised. Mind you I assume it's not HD, right? HD works on the iPad 2 with Netflix now.

HD makes a big difference on a 10" tablet. Still, for the OP, it'd be nice to be able to use the Netflix app, even just for SD. Can you still get that app?

I think it sort of does HD. The videos display at a resolution of 1024x576. Would be the same as on the iPad 2 since both had XGA displays.

The new Netflix app requires iOS 6 minimum, and the max OS the iPad 1 supports is 5.1.1. I'm sure the older app is still floating around out there. You'll probably need to jailbreak to install it.

Going back to the iPad 1 after all this time, the screen really does look like crap on it, compared to the retina display. Perils of being an early adopter.

The app store now includes older versions of apps for devices that cannot run newer versions of iOS. You should be able to install it from the app store like normal.
